Question Rennlist Titles? John D help?

Rennlist Titles? John D help?

Ok Not that I want to start a war here. But what use are titles like Guru and Specialist if the only things they represent are how many posts one has made to the boards. I have to admit from time to time I have added in comments that had nothing to do with our cars and or just simply stating my opinion in an OT post before. But I would like to think that I would lend a hand to anyone who ask me a question given I am able to or life doesn’t take the win out of my sales. I am not a master mech but I have touched “My guess” 80% of the repair or reverb items on my NA and have knowledge to share as a contributor to the board. I would think “specialist” could apply to my title however, I wouldn’t agree with Guru as I simply do not have the running experience. John, would you have any thoughts on how to identify the more experienced individuals here on the board? A newbie wouldn’t have a clue and could be easily misled by these titles?

Just a though

Keith, I agree whole heartily (does this add another post to my total ).

All kidding aside...
How about a "title" that is reserved for those who have written procedures that are keep on Rennlist. Kind of a "on-line" repair/hop-up/modification manual. We could post the articles for general review and then submit to John D. or the site admins for acceptance into our very own hall of fame.

I agree, I don't want a newbie thinking I'm a "guru" that could be a disaster.

Why don't you leave it editable like over at pelican. Thats more fun anyways.

Icat,

Sounds like a great idea, though I should submit more of what I have done so far. Hell I should write a book bet it would be a best seller. Hey you could help write the electrical portion of it.

And yes all kidding aside. I just think that having a group of people others knew where available with the experience to turn to in a pinch wouldn’t be a bad idea. But again it is just a thought

This doesn't have anything to do with the " Anyone posting past 1300 watches Barney in their fruit of the looms and enjoys it!" post, does it?

The idea is nice, but I cant imagine it would work out well. John D. is a busy man, if he was going to do this for our board, then he would have to do it for every individual forum. yikes. Let the "newbie" figure it out on there own, we all did no?
You can always look at the member number, date registered, # posts and if they are a member or not.

And why start something that already exists, and is great btw..clarks garage, paragon tech articles, etc...

Whenever I see these topics about posts/titles it makes me...

WHO CARES?!

If you don't like the title you have then you can take it up with the people who write UBB and VB software. You're spamming the board. I've never seen a n00b complain about the advice he was given, besides...just because they're new to a forum doesn't mean they're new to cars in general. I'm sure they have common sense enough to tell if the advice they're given is legit.

It ain't broke so we don't need to fix it, especially if it leads to another ongoing task for John D., the titles are only intended to be fun.

If changes were to be made, the only idea I could support would be to let us edit our own (Tim could lengthen his name )
Any of you remember the rating system that worked so well?

Dave...How many more posts 'til I'm officially an addict? Guru never seemed to fit anyway...

Paragon's tech articles are nice as well, so are the few at Pelican, and Rennlist for that matter as well, but how many different sites do you need to go to? I'm proposing a general knowledge base, for a built in audience, filled with knowledgeable consumers, who can review the topics BEFORE they make it to the "library" for errors and such.

Just because it already exists isn't a very good reason not to improve on the structure or content. As for John's time... I agree, it's limited, and that's why I suggested allowing the site administrators to review the topics first.

I might add that it seems the ones who complain the most about posts that point out the frevious posters are the frevious posters themselves.

Not suggesting we fix it, I'm suggesting we improve it. Most of our Porsches aren't "broken" when we hop them up. By this line of reasoning everything would stay the same forever.

Now, before everyone attacks...
I could care less how many "stars" or what the screen titles are. There are NO good ways to fix this issue (at least that I'm aware of). I'm NOT suggesting we find some way to "qualify" members - just that we discuss the possibility of identifying members who actually have something of value (measured by the group) to add. Kinda like the "Life Time Member" designation. Perhaps we could add a "Tech Contribution Member" or something along those lines.

And one last thing before I step down from the ole soap box. Keep in mind that many of us, myself included, type as we think - much like talking out loud. No need to crush a post, if you disagree, fine. But don't take it personal.

Keith, I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking your idea, just stating my disagreement. Your second explaination does make a better case but unless you have specific improvements in mind, it still sounds like reinventing the wheel. If you'd care to list the proposed improvements, I'll be glad to give you my opinion .

I agree with the "Who Givves a Rats A$$" portion of this. Titles mean nothing to me. If the advice is good , and most importantly fixed someone's problem- does it really matter if your a lowly "user".. its really unimportant.
Guidelines for a guess (my .02 or IMHO) are more important than user titles.

I think the term "member" means more about someone's commitment to this cause than title anyway.

(EDIT) IF it aint broke, dont fix it. If it requires ANY MORE work for John D I AM AGAINST IT.
He does his job very well here and needs no more NEW tasks.

IMHO.

And BTW,
Timmy a guru.. this rating is VERY subjective!!

Tim- you know i'm kidding- you da man!
