Definitely.
I've got a 225 on 8.5" and it's too narrow/stretched for my liking, but it's nearly new
..will go up to a 245 or 255so long as it doesn't rub my fender.
265 should be safe too if you really need some meat.

i was assuming fronts since who runs 8 or 8.5X17 inch wheels in the rear anymore? [oh-oh here they come]... but now i'm thinking ahh boxter, and the boxter runs oh-so-small wheels so, i guess he IS talking about the rear wheels,
which in that case... 255-40-17 is what you want but probably no bigger for that rim.

I currently run 255/40/17s on the rear and225/45/17 on the front with my summer tires. I'm taking a drive up to new york in a couple weeks so I need to pick up some winter tires and found a really good deal on some brand new 225/45/17 and 235/45/17 so just making sure they would fit. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money because they will only get used for this trip.

Edit:..kinda curious but are you running a square wheel setup? (8.5" all around) If so why don't you run a square tire setup too?

No, I'm not running a square setup. I have 7" in the front. I'm choosing these tire sizes because I can get these really cheap and new.

I like a fat tire too, but like I said this setup is much cheaper. These tires will only be used for this trip, then the summer tires go back on.

V2 you are way off on the fat tires in the back idea NOOOOOO !! your transaxle will never make it up a hill.
what you want is a standard blizzak set up - 205-215 in front - 215 in the back and like two 80 pound bags of sand. i snowboard up in Maine, NH and Vermont -- this setup is what has worked perfect for me for 18 years.
this is what those old ugly cookie cutters are for - lol. and you can also drop the air down to 28 psi when the tarmac is covered.

Just put my snow tires on the S4 last night so I'm ready for the winter! ![Big Grin](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
951 is sleeping peacefully in the garage. Made the mistake too many times of driving my "race/fun" car in the winter (or daily at that). Can't beat heated seats (F&R) + AWD + snow tires + turbo for the winter.
