So, it's a little less than the LS-1 due to lower displacement, but plenty for a little 944 IMO. Apparently they can be had for under $1500 with low miles (like less than 10k miles), complete with all accessories and computer. Of course after you add on all the other stuff you need to install it, your probably more like $7-$8k.
i came across an article one time where they took an L33, put some different heads on it and a cam and took it from 330 hp to about 480.

ill try to find it

Wow, 480 from an L33? Yeah, let me know if you find the article.

Another thing I've wondered about the L33 is whether it is a more stout block that the LS-1. It is made from the same casting, but just has smaller bores. Which makes me think there is probably more meat left in the block when they're done. Not that I've hear about any LS-1 block issues...

I would think the bigger 32-valve heads would be an issue fitting between the strut towers. Maybe we can bring a tape measure to the dealer and find out.

salesman: "can i help you?"
"not unless you can give me detailed measurements on this motor"

my mistake; it was an LQ4 6.0L, all iron though. i imagine youd be able to get similar power from an all aluminum 5.3

I measured the Cayenne engine and it was too wide.

Of course with unlimited funds and fab skills anything is possible but you would have so much time and hours into you'd be better off with a project that you could actually recoup some of your investment.

Should be plenty of room in the hatch in front of the rear wheels. I wonder if anyone has tried to do that with a 944...

928 engine is barely too wide, i mean barely, has anyone ever tried?

the lsx makes sense

the audi i5 v20 make sense and is cheap, its said to be one of the strongest engine out there, and here is 1) a clear write up on how to install it 2) a clear plan on how to make 1000WHP with it:

1) http://www.944-20v.nl/ (audi i5 in a 944)

2) http://www.80tq.com/20vtMotor.html (1000whp plan)

if you planned on using the existing gearbox design the engine would be where you normally sit

Front wheel drive! Put the transaxle in the engine bay.

I can't even imagine the crazy looks you would get from people if you told them you custom build a rear engine/front wheel drive car.
