Engine Swaps

Engine Swaps
Alright, since the most sensible thing to do to get a lot of power out of my little 944 is to swap engines. But what are the problems with swapping engines? What all needs to be done and additionally bought. If this is possible, theres no way im putting an american engine in it, id rather sell it and get a muscle car, but is it possible to fit a cayman s/boxster s engine into my 944? Maybe even an older 911 engine?

e30 m3 S14 engine? those can be decently built for mid 200's
of course going bmw route, try to size up a M70. the 5L V12 from the BMW 750. the E30's are doing that haul ***!!
of course doing massive engine swaps, u gotta watch yer budget hehe

928 would be too wide. If your going to swap a motor, LS is the most sensible dollar/hp swap. 3.4 out of the Boxster/Cayman family would be too wide. I constatnly hear the comment comparing a LS swapped 944 to an old muscle car... A properly done swap with suspension brakes will keep up with anything on the road/track.

don't even get me started - everyone here knows what engine swap is the only viable way to go other than a properly built Porsche 4 cylindar engine... I am sure my bros here will tell you how vocal I am about it... watch Tony G. running the California Roval on youtube. I will eventually go about 100 hp more with a properly set up chevrolet LS2 costing about 7.5 thousnd dollars making around 550 hp.

i think id try the vortec engines, same accessory package as the f-body ls1, still over 300hp, but much much cheaper and common.
or a certain other v8 i have my eye on eventually...

ok who wants my 3.0 variocam ?? the previous owner is 83 years old. He bought it as a retirement present to himself and babied it. It's had everything done and tons of fresh oil and air filters i think its about 1/3 of the way through its service life.
By the way, the whole TIMING BELT THING is way overdone too !! and it was my understanding that the truck motors are iron blocks - they are way too heavy, whereas the aluminum lsx engines weigh in slightly less than the porsche turbos. To "turbo" it requires a rebuild with lower compression pistons right ? my LS2 968 Project is going to come in at about $19,000.00 for the engine + renegade parts + Tony G's add on parts + labor... then there's a tranny rebuild and 0.86 5th and 0.66 6th gears added in about $5,500.00

the vortecs usually are iron but there were at least 2 models made of 5.3L, ~330hp in aluminum blocks and heads. even then the iron blocks arent really that much heavier.
as for turboing it, easiest solution would be just dropping in a complete turbo motor

I'm contemplating the L33 instead of LS-1 for my car. It's the aluminum block HO version of the 5.3L vortec. It came with the desirable Z06 heads and when you swap in a mild cam, headers, eliminate the emissions crap, and tune it, I think it can make about 400 hp (at the crank). So, it's a little less than the LS-1 due to lower displacement, but plenty for a little 944 IMO. Apparently they can be had for under $1500 with low miles (like less than 10k miles), complete with all accessories and computer. Of course after you add on all the other stuff you need to install it, your probably more like $7-$8k.
