Default my love affair is no more

drove a kid home from school on friday to s. plainfield, nj. got 20ft from his house and my timing belt went. pushed the car to his driveway, and he drove me home.

as of right now it's still sitting there. i hope to get it to a shop next weekend and get the final word of engine death and an estimate. if it's over 3k i'm gonna get the stealth fixed, and bring the 944 home and pull the motor and upgrade it to around 200hp n/a for an 8v...just gotta find where to start.

mind you: keeping it an 8v head and n/a

Sorry to hear !

Where are you taking the car? There are a few very good and reasonable mechanics in the area....

If it happened at low rpm/light load and you turned it off right away you may only be in for some bent valves.

If you need a mechanic PM me and I'll shoot you the contact info for the guys I use...they are honest and comparatively inexpensive.

best of luck and keep us all posted !

Pick up a good used head and a head gasket kit (along with new belts or course). You can have it back running in a day. (Some of us did a head job in a field in 3 hours...)

Hope it's not too soon to ask, but...Can you tell us what the maintenance history was on your timing belt?

Wouldn't it be easier to convert to a 16v head than doing the 8v up that much?

I'm interested in the timing belt history too. Mine is almost 5 years old, but has only done 15,000 miles. I'll probably change the belts, rollers and everything again soon - just seems like a bit of a waste to throw those rollers out after 15,000 miles.

Good luck with your engine.

I would think the rollers would be fine after only 15,000 miles. But the belt age is what will cause the problems. Buy 2 belts, pull the covers off, and if the water pump or any rollers look bad, replace as necessary. Probably you can just slap the belts in and you have another 3-4 years without worries.

To get 200hp will cost you well over $3K. Lots of shiny, polished, balanced internal parts.. some racer trickery etc. Spend $500-1000 and have a used motor installed.

Remember Gents, 3 years on the belts or 30K miles, which ever comes first. CHANGE the BELTS.

Cheers,

Change the belts, don't change the rollers (unless you know one is bad for some reason.) You are probably being conservative even then... the rollers just don't wear that quickly.

How old is the WP?
