Cash for clunkers is over, at least the bloodshed can end.

I saw a pdf of what cars were "clunked" and only a few 944s were done in, a hell of a lot fewer than I thought at least.

The bright side is the more 944s off the road the more rare/expensive ours become!

It's not cash for clunkers, it's something called the CARS program. Probably California Against Rare Stuff. But I think it's a program where people turn in old cars to junkyards for a little cash, and the junkyard gets paid by the state to kill the engine, and is free to sell the rest. God damn whoever thought it was OK to blindly and indiscriminately target "old" cars. That S2 engine was worth so much money. Not to mention the whole car was worth good money, and there was probably at least one guy on the market looking for a low miles blue S2.

2 days ago at pick n pull I saw a mercedes 400E with pink paint on the engine.... that really pissed me off, because I'm on the market for an inexpensive 400E right now.

Somebody get that transmission. I want it...

I heard a ton of horror stories about Cash 4 clunkers. Of course I can't prove any are true. But if even a few of them are Cash 4 Clunkers was car murder!

It was. I saw row, after row, after row of decent looking european cars at the wrecking yard with pink paint on the engines. There were a lot of SUVs and domestic junk too, so the slaughter was unbiased. Equal opportunity murder.

The auto holocaust as we know it.

Can anyone head to this pull a part and grab the front spindle/hub assemblies for me? That would be great!

From a post on the 928 board.

List of some intersting cars that were destroyed including a Bently, a GNX and a Aston Martin:

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/24/s...served-better/

Above also has a list to all the cars destroyed.

If you're interested in how they did it here is a dealer killing a C4 Corvette:

[/QUOTE]

Or the killing of a nice Turbocharged Volvo. Word of caution to car junkies this video is painful:

http://jalopnik.com/5327580/video-ho...r-clunkers-car

The whole CARS program is/was so wrought with ignorance but I'll refrain from speaking my mind about the people that elected this administration.

So, Germany had a famously successful CFC program, what went in the trash over there? I doubt they were Borgwards and DKU's...

The list is on Autoblog and Jalopnik. I call shenanigans on some of those cars. 2008 models? Maybe those were wrecked or shipped overseas and the dealer just decided to do the clunker paperwork on them to get some free money. Others on the list are no way eligible due to getting too high gas mileage.

Shenanigans!

Watch that video.

Look how much pollution the government CARS program produces.

Does anyone really think that that C4 corvette was going to produce more smog than that in the remainder of its lifetime??? WTF. I hate ignorance. We need car people in the EPA and in the gov't offices that make emissions related legislation.

There is a LOT of misinformation being spread in the name of fun politics. First, if a car is worth over $3,500 you'd have to be a moron to trade it as a clunker. It did need to meet a mileage level and 944s shouldn't be there. And while engines were killed, the rest of the cars are available for scrap. In theory, every car sold would be more efficient than the one that got killed.

As a stimulus move, it's hard to argue with it. The government invests $3,500, but it creates a transaction that's probably worth an average of $20,000, so if you want private stimulus, there you go. Of course, it has created the predictable vacuum in sales for September. Mark Levin is not going to tell you any of this stuff.

And I voted for McCain.

Given the problems with the number 2 bearing I wonder how bad the rest of the engine is? Hmm maybe there are some good parts in there if all did was lock up the #2? I know on my motor that blew up the #2 due it seizing up the rest of the engine was good (save the giant hole). So may be the head it ok after a good cleaning? Heck I would be interested to snag it and tear it apart to really see what is salvagable or not.

Hmm gearbox is probably good! Who wants an S2 Ring & Pinion?

Not to mention all the external hardware, pulleys, fuel rail, etc. Someone could have picked up the whole thing and done an LS1 conversion.
