I almost took a job in Lima... Kinda glad now I didn't take it...

As far as "can I turbo my N/A" ... it is almost a joke that has risen to iconic level... my reply was half laughing hoping it was someones joke, and half here we go again....

The turbo being sold for $100 was bought last month for $50... how good a deal is it really? not to mention a turbo rebuild starts at $350 and goes up from there... I di mine myself, and might have saved myself $50 - $75 at best when all was said and done, but WOW what a difference it made to my 951..

Honestly with the cost of fitting a turbo to an N/A 944 will surpass the cost of just buying a 951 and getting it right the first time... I picked my 951 up for $3200..there are a few running around that were had for less than 1K... you can hardly get a good turbo for that..not to mention the rest of the car...

Thanks John, I think I might look around for a 951 if I can find one cheap enough. If not, no biggie, I like my 944 N/A. Besides I just had it painted a few months ago

having had my ring and pinion nuke itself into lots of small shards and 3 large ones while cruising at 65 mph on the highway for an hour leads me to agree with tifo.

ANYTHING can be done with enough time, effort and $$$$...
is it worth it? in this case, no...there is an easier path...buy a 951

without being a smartass, if you don't have the technical sophistication to do some research (search, review manuals, forums) and the basic mechanical understanding to comprehend the enormity of the task...you don't even want to begin thinking about tackling something like this...

and if you did have this knowledge, understanding and skill set, you probably would know the answer and not even ask

all imho

Pandora's box: opened.

Enjoy your NA. Buy a 951. Have two. Be boosted.

Of course, we do all understand that the precedent for a bolt-on turbo from the factory parts bin has been set by 20+ years of North American and Japanese production, right? A staggering number of car enthusiasts have owned one of these at one point before coming to Porsche, and while I'm new to Rennlist, I think you can and should be forgiven for asking this: maybe it won't be durable, but you can turbocharge and intercool your B-series Honda motor for peanuts.

Also, Rennlist's search engine is only as good as YOUR ability to concisely answer a question and stay on-topic. This thread, like so many others, is on page three of flaming and in-jokes in response to a basic question, and while some were thoughtful enough to answer the question instructionally, most weren't.

Excellent post. Not only should they be forgiven, they should be encouraged. Like I said, it makes more sense to go the 951 route in this case, but the close-minded "no you can't" attitude is the real problem here, and it's pretty widespread in the Porsche community. There's this huge misconception that a lot of things are "hard" to do to our cars, and that everything is super expensive, when really neither has to be true.

one may be doing him a disservice by saying yes, go for it...just dive in and give it a shot...
several 1000 $'s later with his car in pieces he might be a bit pissed...

I didn't see too many riding him hard, but I'm sure this question has been asked 100 times +

I searched '944 add turbo', 20 pages of hits...
just one for an example 'turbo add on?'
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...bo-add-on.html

some preach to him, you 'preach' to us...what is the difference?

Default Turbocharged N/A

I've watched this tread and I decided to give my 2 cents worth. I have a reliable fast Turbocharged N/A, I run stock 951 turbo gear on my 86, every thing just bolted up (not so on pre 85.5). I'm a real hacker so I have thoroughly enjoyed the conversion experience. I must say this is not for the technically challenged, it takes a ton of knowledge to get the car running well, I also would have spent the cost of a 951 If I had a mechanic do the work. My last part of the conversion was the transmission, I ran my N/A transmission for 18 months before going to a 6 speed. Once again, there is not much N/A left in my car, only the front fenders with turbo look bumper cover, pistons, block, head and electronics are stock. The care really moves and has been quite reliable at 10PSI, I have had the conversion for two years and just love the car.

So in the end, supercharge it

You'll be the envy of stock 951s while they're still stuck in lag mode
Bonus points if you keep the n/a look for a sleeper. At least as much of a sleeper as a Porsche can be

He's in the GTA. I bought his old NA spoiler for my car last fall. Nice guy. I have got to see his car.
