If Mike051 doensn't have anything for you, I have a standard NA box that I'd part with for $500. Good shape, no problems. I'm about 1.5 hours from the NJ-NY boarder - and around all weekend.

I have a good transaxle out of '85/2. I would like $600 for it.
I'm about 3 hours from you. If we can meet half way on I80, I can get it to you fast.

Thank you so much for the super-quick replies; it's great to know people like you guys exist to help a stranger get problems sorted. However, the team has concluded that we're not taking the 944 to the vintage this weekend. Work prevents me from installing the rear end anytime before thursday, and thursday is the start of practice for the weekend.

So, I'll still be in need of a new transmission, but now I have the time to get EXACTLY what I want.

-Short 5th
-L.S.D.
-Maybe a Trans cooler ( I didn't even think of that...tell me more.)

So, I'll be shopping around and starting this ****ty process.
Good news is I'll be driving Dad's Vette.

Thanks again guys..

a turbo trans has a short 5th...problem is everything else is tall lol

trans cooler only came optional on turbo trans, i imagine it would be doable on an NA unit but not really necessary and youd need to figure out a pump mechanism.

if i had the time id take the 5th from my NA box put it in my turbo box and put the turbo 5th in the na box and sell it to you lol

Okay. I just picked up a S box with a short 5 and LSD with 0 miles on it. It was freshly rebuilt. The only problem is now I need to know what to put in it. How many quarts of what kind of gear oil and should I be using LSD additive now?

Also when installing a short throw shifter, does that replace the shift linkage on the top of the transmission? Because as it turns out, the shift rod that goes out to the car and the shift linkage on top of the transmission sort of fused themselves together...they had to be cut and the shift bar had to be re-drilled. Now I hope that the short throw replaces the rod on top of the transmission.

George is good people. It should serve you well.

I use Mobil 1 Delvac. You fill it up till it starts to run out of the fill hole... Just under 2 quarts, I believe.

what exactly causes the ring and pinion to blow up like that? Is it hard take offs? doing burnouts?

the 944 doesn't have much power with 140-150 hps and 130-140 tq why would the transmission blow up like that?
