Default M8 35mm length x 1.25mm pitch 8.8 grade bolts

If you haven't noticed this is, in my opinion, the single most common bolt used on the 944. They are all over the exhaust, the accessory struts and mounts, and elsewhere. I just placed an order for a lot of these with their corresponding nuts (because you can't order from McMaster Carr in any small denomination). So if you need a few but don't feel like spending $1 a piece on them at lowe's (yes that is about how much they are) then shoot me a PM. I should only need about 20 of them so I should have plenty left.

We had that at Duke but I couldn't fit the 944 in the machine shop there.

Yeah fortunately I do have some fresh ones but there are definitely some not-so-fresh and some entirely missing, especially around the PS pump.

BoltDepot sells them individually for pretty cheap (though you will have to pay shipping...)

I had always ordered stuff from McMaster for engineering projects so I was used to their website so I just rolled with it. It's cool having had classes just on what the stuff embossed on the top of the bolt heads means.

Doubt you will enjoy how this turns out....unless you actually got grade 12.9 hex heads....which are very rare.

Those cheeseheads are grade 12.9, which torque to 32 ft lbs. Getting a hex head in anything over grade 10.9 is very hard to do. And a 10.9 hex head is only good to about 24 ft.lbs. That won't keep the axles attached.

Each one torqued to spec... how's that work?

Socket heads come in both 10.9 and 12.9. Just make sure they are 12.9 and you'll be fine. A 10.9 bolt in that application, is not up to the task. It is overtorqued at 32 ft lbs. It might tighten that tight, but it is way past its optimum "clamping" stage.

Porsche actually knew what they were doing!

They are 12.9 and have been on there for 3+ years.

On this one... I think triple-square/cheeshead bolts for axles was over-engineering at its finest...

Really? I've rounded out an allen head caliper bolt before and it's no fun to get out. Would hate to have that happen on the CV joints.

Really!

Practically speaking, you ever pull a pristine, clean, cheesehead bolt socket off your CV? Laws of probability are that you'd strip a dirty cheesehead on a CV faster than an allen head.

Just personal experience/preference... nothing more, nothing less.

The OP needs to part out a car- then you're nearly set for life on 944 hardware.

The Porsche bolts are better rustproofed than most anything hardware I've used. I once installed cheapish Allen heads from a bulk hardware store. They rusted so quickly (maybe 6 months) that I was concerned about being able to remove them. I replaced them with Porsche bolts, and didn't have any rustproofing issues.

Even in a climate where you don't need to worry about rust, I would be concerned about pebbles and other junk getting kicked up and chipping away at the CV bolts. This is assuming that your transmission doesn't have the special anti-rust oil leak feature.

I'm not replacing my CV bolts...I ordered these mainly for all the things like exhaust and engine accessories like the PS pump.

My transmission definitely has the special anti-rust oil leak feature.
