Timing belt rubbing rear cover
Here's the issue I have, and yes I searched and couldn't find an answer.
The timing belt is rubbing on the rear cover. The cover was modified before I acquired the car to allow the install of the new style pump and belt guide. The belt tracks wells on the rollers and is not hanging off any of them. Instead the cover is bending/leaning toward the front of the car coming in contact with the belt in the area of the belt guide. There does not appear to be fasteners in the top portion of the rear cover to hold it back from the belt. Any thoughts on what is going on or how to keep the cover off the belt?
I'm half tempted to just remove the covers. Anyone ever cut the rear cover off so you do not have to remove the crank pulley?
Thanks
Tom

People have removed belt covers here before. I personally wouldn't because I like the idea of them being covered and protected from FOD. You could just source a newer style set of covers here for pretty cheap, or just take them off. I wouldn't cut them off, if you're going to do it, I suggest doing it the right way. The crank bolt isn't too difficult to remove.

There are bolts right where the upper timing gear cover (aluminum) bolts on, see pic. If the area to the right of the TB idler roller is hitting, yeah, it's time for a new cover. Whoever modified the cover may have gotten into it too far, and it's gotten weak.

I have the two upper ones and the two interior ones installed, I have them circled. The line I drew on the pic shows where the belt is rubbing.
Any thoughts as to why the belt that came on the car and the first replacement did not rub, but the second replacement belt did?
So who has a new style set of covers they want to get rid of?
Thanks

On the early 944s, the timing belt tensioner stud was a failure point:

Maybe cam gear bolt needs replacement- do not retorque

There's a wire for the oil pressure gauge that runs behind the inner; any chance it got stuck between the inner cover and the block?
The two bolts you need are circled in yellow

Do you think a 2 piece rear cover would work if you cut it like this?
The picture shows poorly how the 2 outter belt covers are devided-RED lines.
The white line would be where the rear belt cover could be cut in half and have 2 block anchors for top and bottom with the 2 outter belt covers adding support. I have not done this and it is only a quess.
