Post Any ideas on headlight motor

Last night the headlight doors would not raise, only close after I manually opened them. After some troubleshooting.

If I operate the relay on the motor manually they raise and lower. So.
Relay is good.
Motor is good.
Plug at motor has good ground, gets power with switch on and 1 pin powers up 2-3 seconds when the switch is turned on.
Raised manually they close when the switch is turned off.
Cleaned limit switches.

Could it be the headlight switch? If so any way to test it? <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> Time to <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" /> <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> and think.

Yeah I would start with the relay firt as well. Mine acts up once in while now after replacing the motor, and won't go down after turning lights off. But its a lose connection. If I tap the connector it closes. I replaced the motor because I had very frequent bouts of up/down winking, which the new "used" motor solved.

I have two extra relays, one I bought to try and fix the wink, and the one that came with the motor I bought. So I'd be happy to send one to you to try first.

Send me an email if you're interested.

Sorry, didn't see your earlier post about having already obtained a relay. If you want, I'll send you my other motor, but you'll have to prepay the shipping since its a beast.

It came out of my 88 NA, and like I said it winks, though I can't confirm whether the winking was caused by the lose connection which is less lose now, or what.

Paul:

Sounds to me like the relay, but it could be a problem with the motor.

I have a good used motor from an '86 951 if you are interested. I am open to a reasonable offer. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Paul somehow ran into this problem installing the headlight wiring kit. So keep that in mind when thinking about problems & solutions.

No other installers have had such a problem and I originally thought he must have forgotten to re-attach the headlight motor ground after adding the supplemental grounds to the frame rail. But Paul has checked things and all seem in order. He must have knocked some connector or there is quite the coincidence.

BTW, the headlight motor relay is a standard 87/87a relay. Even retail from top manufacturers like Hella or P&B (Tyco) it should be under $10 so don't get ripped off.

That's the one that the dealer wanted $47 for. If I switch that one out with the heater blower it works there and the good blower relay does the same thing for the lights.

The service manager at the dealer is looking into it too, after checking and rechecking everything I'm going for the coincidence.

I've got to go back to work for several days and may take somebody up on a motor later.

Thanks

I responded to your e-mail on that crazy price for the relay. If you are going to be working on making some money to support the car for the next couple days <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" /> I can put a spare relay into the mail. It has a plastic mounting tab on it. I'll chop that off on the bandsaw, just so you know what happened there.

Or get a cheap 87/87a relay at the local PepBoys so you can test things out and I will get a good Hella relay without the tab next time I order. I understand the need for people to make a markup on parts if they want to feed their families, but well over 10 times markup, come on.
