If it only happens when you're braking, the problem is the brakes, period. Manual steering or power steering won't affect that - if it doesn't shake when not braking but shakes when braking, the shaking is caused by what you changed, the brake system. Vibration under braking is a typical sign that your rotors are worn out and warped. I'd replace the front rotors, and replacing brake pads while you're at it is a very good idea. You can replace the fluid if you really want, but that's not really necessary when just replacing pads/rotors.

I'd try that before you go out and throw a lot of money at bushings

+1 on replacing the front rotors first, and see if that solves the vibration. (almost 100% that it will).

For street, Zimmerman cross drilled are available from several sources and work well. If there's still a problem, then look for more complex causes.

"Mushy" suspension might exaggerate the vibration under braking, but would not cause it.

I had the same problem. Mine would drive fine but if you got the speed up it woul jerk the steering like you were on a rough road. Turns out it was a couple of problems, there was a bolt missing from one of the control arms and the ball joints needed to be replaced Oh and the passenger swaybar bushing need was rotting This is a common problem.
