Default 968 rear shelf

Is anyone using a 968 rear shelf in their 944/951? I bought one off of eBay for cheap, stripped it, and recovered it in ridiculously expensive Feintuft velour carpet and am not happy with the way it sits in the car. Looks good though.

If anyone has one installed, I'd like to see some pictures. I was so frustrated this weekend that I walked away from it.

it will have gaps when put into a coupe because the cab rear seat area is a little narrower because of the roof mechanism

Here's mine. I do have gaps, but haven't decided what to do about them yet. Guess they don't bother me that much. Still like it better than the rear seat!

Little narrower because of the double floor pans. There is significantly less space in a cabriolet than there is in a coupe

i think im going to try to custom engineer my own cubby boxes/package shelf.

ben (or anyone else), if you get a chance (or if you already have them) could i see some pictures of the shelf from different angles? front, side, back, bottom, top would be great so i have some idea of how its built.

The side gaps don't actually bother me - I will probably take some rigid foam, cut it to shape and cover them with carpet. The part I was talking about is in the rear corners where the shelf meets the body - mine stick up about 25mm. I will try to pull back the carpet on the car to see if the box fits down any better.

Here is what the box looks like after I covered it with new carpet. I couldn't find an automotive vinyl I liked, so I ended up using foam-backed headliner cloth (left over from doing the headliner) on the doors and center piece.

Left rear corner that sticks up:

Right rear corner that sticks up:

I have new lock trim pieces on order - mine are broken. I don't have the keys for mine either - I'll either have to have some keys made or I'll have to order new locks ($90/pair).

I was able to cover the box with one piece of carpet similar to how it was originally covered. What a PITA!

No offense to anyone here. That just does not look that cool to me. Has anyone ever made their own, that maybe sits level with the rear hatch floor? Links?

I did a cubby/amp set up a few years ago. It holds and hides quite a bit and uses the rear seat back like OE.

I read your entire build thread before buying this box. I almost went that route, but I didn't know if I'd have the patience. I also didn't need to install speakers or an amp, so I opted for the 968 shelf.

I think I have the problem resolved. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough light last night to get any pictures. I moved the box forward about 40mm which let me drop it down on the hump and allowed the corners to sit down where they're supposed to. I still have some finish work to do with the carpet. I did have to bend the brackets around to get them to line up with the bolt holes - it looks like the 968 seatbelts sit down and aft compared to the 944 - probably because they don't have the seatbelt retractor where we do.

The only issue now is the box has an overhang. It didn't look too bad this morning when I took a quick look at it, but I'll have to look at it again after work with a more critical eye.

I'm not sure I'm 100% happy with the cloth covered doors.
