Fixed it (again).

Starter had been cranking slowly to start, then speeding up a bit before it fired.

Then it cranked slowly and stopped. No solenoid click, no nothing.
Jumped it across the terminals, a bit of spark, but nothing else.

Pulled the starter & found the field wire (the braided wire that goes from the solenoid into the motor itself) was broken.
Put power to the broken end and the starter spun just fine.

It took a bit of effort to get the motor apart (35 years is a long time), but I got it apart, put a new wire in and got it back together. Bench tested fine and put it in the car.

It now cranks better than it has in a while, and far less 'grinding & growling' from the starter motor. I put a bit of lube on the bushings when I had it apart. Made a good deal of difference.

Beats the living daylights out of paying for a new starter.

I managed to blow out a exhaust manifold gasket between it and the head merging onto the freeway.

Now the old girl sounds like a tractor.

I'll dig into it when I have a day off of work and another set of lower gaskets so I can replace them all.

I'll be towing the cab home today, the plug to the right of the brake fluid reservoir broke in half. Does anyone know what this part is called?

Put the driver's seat back in the car but not before weighing it. 50 lbs even! 50 lbs!! so that's 100 lbs for for the front. Man that's a lot of weight. Built to last.

recaro evolved from reutter, the early coachbuilder for the 356.

elite, you may be speaking of the check valve for the brake booster. if your lacking a tow eye, you could plug the line and drive but you would loose the brake assist.

I have a long list of "minor" things right now. I started by ordering some hard-line vacuum hoses because I cracked the one that goes to the throttle body.

Experienced some bucking at the track the other day. It would correct itself if I backed off the gas so I decided to break open the AFM and check for worn out bits on the wiper arm track of my '87 924s. I decided to move the assembly held in place with the three screws rather than raising and bending the arm. The idea of moving it comes courtesy of Eric the Car Guy. You can read his write-up at https://www.ericthecarguy.com/kunena...k-clean-fiddle

Got a pair of 968 mirrors mounted. The glass isn't on yet as I'm waiting for the manual parts to convert from power but at least the hard part is done. Drivers side took maybe 10 minutes. Passenger side took about 30 because the bolt holding the flag mirror on was rusted and had to be drilled out. But not a hard or complicated process. Updates the car nicely and solved my problem of bouncy mirrors from broken motors.

Well, a couple weeks into my new job so (slow) progress on the car has finally started again after way way too long. Ordered chain tensioner pads and will check on the belts tomorrow to see if I need to do the full service.

Long list of stuff to do this coming fall/winter in prep for spring including some go fast bits - getting excited.

Rebuilt all three components of the shifter linkage. I think it's better than new now.

First timing / balance belt change was successful. Engine runs smooth and I'll finally get to drive it with some aggression now.
