Seems like it'll be an awesome car in the end! Hope to see pictures of a shiny engine bay when you're finished!

I'm excited for the outcome. how did the 20v project go though? that was something i dreamed of 2 years ago when i almost bought an 88 944 w/o an engine for 300$ and was thinking of what motor would make me cream the fastest... i ended up deciding it would be next to impossible to throw a 20v turbo in the 944 chassis with my money situation and mechanical know-how.

but man... i still wish i had that motor some times, it sure is perky with a gt30r on it

That motor looked like it was born there.

Yes we all know its a Porsche, yes we all know its a VW engine, but I'm a car enthusiast before I'm a Porsche enthusiast so all i see here is someone replacing an engine with the one that he wants in his car. Big deal!

I love what you're doing here, simply for the fact that nobody (or very few people) have done this before.

Oh, and I love the sound of a VR6..

pity its not a turbo 5cylinder. those motors (from a ur quattro coupe) can push massive hp on stock internals. i forget the name now, its 3am here, but a reputable tuner was making long blocks of that motor with 400+ hp for about 5k

having owned an "Ur Quattro"...unless you pump huge $$$$ into it they are not all that great. (nor is the 1.8T either) because it is not just a chip for that power. You need a bigger turbo and alot of tuning work. The rally cars only had 400 hp untill the 20v came along in 84, that was a totally different animal(with efi not cis, and a huge turbo)
you obviously read too much VW Vortex
again, what could I possibly know? right...everyone here is a dummy and beleives whatever you write

on you VR swap, you gonna stand the motor up? or are you laying it over ala stock? what intake you gonna use? what about the oil pan? did you think a stock VR from a jetta/golf? what one a3 or a4 chassis? AAA or AFP? did you think of a Eurovan one yet? 24v or 12 valve?
5 cylinders are laydowns like the 944...what about an oil system? will a stand up motor clear the hood? What does a beetle clutch disc have to do with anything or is it an Audi one?

I am using the 12V AAA motor, and it's being built from the bare block. The oil pan will be a modified stock aluminum unit. I've already answered the other questions, and I will ask you again, nickg, to keep your posts civil, please, or not to post at all.

I started this thread for those who think at some point they might benefit from it.

Project on hold: while watching my four-year-old in the front yard yesterday, I took my six inch serrated lockblade knife out of my pocket, and began trimming low-hanging small branches from bradford pear tree. The two activities are NOT compatible. End result, some minor arterial bleeding and seven or eight stitches to put the end of my left thumb where it belongs, lol... some minor anxiety on the part of my little daughter. "Daddy okay? Daddy okay?" (Didn't let her see much, just enough to make use of a teachable moment---knives are dangerous if you're not careful.) Stitches have to stay in place for 10 -14 days.

Ouch!

( I've got to agree with you on the contribute or STFU. That wouldn't make it past the first post in several of the boards here.)

good luck with the project. What ever you do, don't take any advice from Spencer.

Just call me Mr. Stubbs...and who's Spencer, lol? The worst part was feeling that serrated edge on bone, and knowing I'd REALLY done it this time...it didn't come ALL the way off, but it didn't lack much.

I hope your thumb heals up

An S2 swap is
1. PLAYED
2. costs too much for too little
3. you still have no aftermarket or modability
4. you still have a timing BELT, stupid balance shafts, and expensive parts

To be blunt, the VR6 is basically all the pros of the chevy swap, while still being german, and even homogenous since VW and Porsche always share development. Just think, if the 928 never existed (which some of us wish were true), we wouldn't have gotten stuck with a silly half-engine, and we would have eventually gotten the vr6 for the S2 and 968.

178hp? Sure, if you're too lazy to put a turbo kit on it. There is no way I will buy the argument that building an X horsepower 944 engine (turbo or not) is cheaper than building (and fitting) an X horsepower vw engine. I think a complete stock 951 rebuild will cost as much as Vonov's entire project. I rebuilt a 968 engine, and it wasn't even a complete rebuild, and it cost me over $3k.... and that doesn't include the cost of purchasing it!

968s have motronic not jetronic.

Those pics will be very helpful. I've been making connections and finding parts. I got a junk tranny to cut up, and I've been talking to some local "dubbers". Tomas Sport Tuning here in the bay area is a premier vw tuner so I will be picking their poor brains. One guy at TST made a RWD mid engine turbo vr6 gti with massive power. I need to buy that guy a drink or 7.

I'm thinking a AAA 2.8L engine with 12v head and an R32 crankshaft, for the "3-liter 12v". That might hit 200hp on it's own, then a little turbo can add a hundred. Before I get ahead of myself I need to find and engine.
