Default I have a banshee in my car.....

So I'm took the car to visit the mum yesterday. drove 40 miles highway no problem. upon almost reaching destination, literally 2 blocks from their house, I make a right turn. this godawful screeaching noise comes from right front of the car. the sound of metal on metal. but it only there for a moment, not even half a second. my first thought was wheel bearing...but there's no play if i jiggle the wheel. i drove around the block a couple of times doing turns, jiggles, shimmies, nothing. no sound, no screeching. I looked under the car to see if anything was hanging, nothing. I drive home on highway, all the time nothing. then just as i get home, i went over a bump, again the banshee screams for a brief second. as the bump passed nothing again.

i'm still thinking between wheel bearing, suspension, maybe brake pad/rotor? any advice on anything else to check before I start replacing stuff?

my friend's scion xb needs new brakes. this we know because whenever he hits the brake pedal there is a disgusting metal on metal grinding sound as the metal pad backing tears into the rotor surface lol.

it doesn't happen when i stomp on the brakes though, i tried it! hehe.

i think it happens when i'm turning right and the right side suspension is compressed. i'm going to do a prelim check tonite then take it out for a drive to replicate conditions.

It could be a simple as the brake dust shield (thin metal shield behind the rotor) getting bent and scraping on the rotor. At least you should HOPE that's all it is.

i don't know if the shield would make that sound....it's not like a cymbal ringing. we're talking hardcore banshee scream that's LOUD. def bare metal being pressed against rotating bare metal sound. i wonder if maybe the brake pads have the tab indicator and that's hitting the rotor when i turn....that would be an ideal diagnosis too

maybe a rock between the shield and the rotor, had that happen at an auto-x and my first thought was something is horribly wrong.

The right front suspension is unloaded on a right turn. If the dust shield is loose, I'd expect it to make a racket all the time. Try jacking the car up at the RF corner just enough to get that wheel off the ground so you can spin it.

so i got home from work and opened up the garage door.....and immediately saw what was wrong.

the muffler hangars snapped off and the muffler was hanging by the middle hangar and only 2 inches off the ground. so i guess when i was turning right and hit a bump in just the right way, the muffler or the pipe would screech on the ground.

i also checked the front right wheel bearing and yea...it'll need replacing too. tightened up a bit and drove out. no more sound!
