Default License Plate Modification with Pics

***EDIT*** Tonight I'll take some of the reflection out of the pics so that the mod is easy to see.

I always hated the way our license plates didn't sit even with the taillights. Thought that it looked odd that the plate sat a inch beneath the bottom of the taillights.

Long long time ago (in a galaxy far away) Danno came up with an idea of how to raise the license plate. Basically you turn the holder upside down, cut-off about a half-inch from what used to be the bottom of the bracket but now is the top (Dremel works great for this). Drill new holes that re-align the plate even with the taillights. Tweak the bend slightly to make the plate sit flatter. De-burr the sharp edges from the cuts and the new holes. Spray the bracket with nice shiney black to keep it from rusting and as they say in the work manuals "installation is reverse of removal." Oh yeah, don't forget to turn the rubber bumpers on the back of the bracket rightside up again.

It's a small modification that probably no one outside of an enthusiast will ever notice BUT I noticed.............

I've done that to every 944 I've owned. What was Porsche thinking? It does make a difference, especially from the side.

How do your tag lights still light that?

Don't mean to take dump on your idea, but some of us have to pass inspection.

I just swapped front/rear brackets. The rear bracket on mine had an offset crossbar, the one on the front was right in the middle. It raised the rear license plate up and moved the front one down out of the way of the intercooler.

Any higher and I think it would look odd.

They were thinking about euro plates.

I flip them but instead of cutting I just put a slight bend on the top two bars. The top of the tag will line up just behind the lights so they are still illuminated.

I separated mine and re-welded it. I just like to play with my welder though.

I never noticed that! But for years my license plate was on the bumper with a big reflector panel between the lights, so I'm just happy to have the plate back where it belongs.
