Post My tires are 8 years old - new tire time?

Hah. Well, I was looking at my cracking full-of-tread Bridgestone stock sized 215/60-15 tires and found out 2 funny things:
1. The were manufactured in 1994 , yikes
2. one of the front tires isnt even a Bridgestone, its a Yokohama (I guess the PO had a flat?)

anyway... time for some new tires I guess
question is most generally whats good to get in stock form? but also wondering if I should go a little wider or what?

looking at tirerack it seems like theres only 5 tires on there in the stock size, wha?
would going to 225 in the rear and 215 infront be okay? whats the widest combo front/rear I should go on stock 15" phonedials?

the Michelin Pilot XGT V4 is showing up as the best tire on tirerack.. i remember there being more stuff before.. there are more tires in 225 though..

also, I know if I go to my local tire place they are going to try to sell me Toyo's but tirerack doesnt sell Toyo (thats probably why they do it, so one cant pricematch).. how are those? Both of our family cars now run Toyo

yuck. just seems like theres so little selection in 15"

thanks in advance for any advice

Nothing is wrong with Toyos, they make good tires.

Pirellis are OK but in general their non-ultra performance tires aren't as good. Michelins tend to be overpriced and wear quickly in my experience.

I run Yokohama Parada Spec-2s on my Z3. I doubt they make them in the size you are looking for though. When I had my 16" wheels I had Yokohama AVS ES100s, and was very happy with those for the price...

www.tirerack.com is a great place to buy tires from. Huge selection, great prices, and fair shipping costs.

What part of the north east are you from? If you live in PA I can get you some tires and the price can't be beat.

Personally, i am a michelin fan- for everyday driving they are great, I used to run Toyo's but the roadnoise made me nuts ( a small stretch for me!!), I have Eagle LS's now and they need to be replaced soon- I'm going with XGT's.. I like the road grip. BTW I DONT RACE!, if i did i would have Kumho's..

Michelin's are also one of my favorite tires. If you don't mind spending the extra $$ then go for it. You normally get what you pay for when you buy michelin tires.

I agree, the FZ4's are a little on the noisy side. I was going to put on the T1-S's but decided I wasn't going to keep the car long enough.

XGT's are great tires BTW.

If you get 225-50's your speedo will be off. Just stick with 215-50's. If your tires are that old you are definately not pushing your car really hard. I just went from my Toyo 225/245 tires to my 205 snow tires. I was amazed at how much grip they still have!

I had Michelin and really liked them, they wear very well.I put on yokohama AVS intermediat 225/50.At first I didnt like them,it took about 5k to wear them in,now I really like them. They use a soft compound ,they stick well but wear fast.Thats where the Michelin shine, last longer and they do handle well !!

I went with 225/50 Toyo's all the way around, I like the feel a lot better than the 215's. Speedo is off a little, but I don't drive by that anyways.

i dont wanna go down to 50 aspect ratio, i want the tall 60 aspect ratio for sure

my question was about WIDTH (215/225/etc)

I was thinking of going with slightly skinnier tires in front and slighter wider tires in the rear

Porsche OE for 944 is 215 width 60 aspect ratio so I was thinking do a Turbo style thing and go 205 front and 225 rear or stay 215 front and do 225 rear, just wondering how wide/narrow I can go on stock rims? Anyone know? they are 7" or something? Im kinda clueless there...

and yea Michelins are lookin tasty, but $$. And Pirelli's are Porsche OE (supposedly) thats kinda neat.

No width experience, but I run the XGT V4s and they are outstanding tires, especially in the wet. In fact, I think you can find much less expensive tires out there in 215/60/15 that are V rated but not all season--I can't remember specific ones, I just remember that sinking feeling when I knew I was going with the Michelins for so much more only because I wanted an all season tire. Still, I'm amazed at how well they handle rain, with very little hydroplaning even for such a light car. Dry performance, cornering, braking, etc. are all great (though I'm no Mario Andretti).

So, again, if you don't drive in the wet, check out the summer tires for less $$$.
