Default 215/60/15 tire recommendation?

It is just about time to replace my tires and I'm looking for recommendations. I live in the northeast and only drive my '86 944 April - Nov (~3000 miles per yr). I'd prefer to keep the stock 15" phone dial rims. Any suggestions would be great.

so im assuming you want summer tires then ?? since a majority of that date is the summer.

then in your stock size, Yokohama AVS ES100 should be good for a summer tire. they dont have many options for a summer tire in 15inch, thats why im looking to switch to a 16inch that has more options.

but if you want all seasons, falken zE 912 are good

+1 on the Yoko's. I Have them on my car (5 yrs) and they are great for wet or dry traction. I would buy them again. Like you I only drive April thru Oct. but only about 1K/yr.
Welcome and tell us where your at.

Thanks for the info guys. I did see both the Yoko's and Falken on Tire Rack, but I wanted to get opinions from someone who had them on their 944. I currently have Yoko AV1-60i and they are about 8 yrs old and starting to crack betwen the treads.

I also consdiered the bfg g-force sport, but I think they only come in 205/60R15. Will these still fit ok? Will speedo be off?

My background.
I live just south of Boston, MA. This my 2nd 944. Both were 1986 models. 1st one I owned between 1995-1999. The current one I have owned since Jan 2003.

215/60 15 are getting very hard to find in performance tire. Good luck with what ever you find in that size. 225/50 R15 are the performance option however being shorter than stock they look a little odd and lower the gearing and speedo. Great for the track or autocross, but not ideal on the street.

These days 16's maybe a good way to go as 225/50 R16 all the way around (or 205/55 R1 front) make a nice car and you might be able to get a set of 16's relatively cheap especialy in Phone dials. In general the car will look the same only with a bit more meatly look.

I've been happy with the Yoko ES-100's on my early 85.

hey porschekid

ive got the falken ZE 912 on my car, they are 215/60-15 all around, the rear wheels are like .5 wider (i think) than the front.

as for the falkens, they do the job in the colder weather, but im longing for something more. the falkens can only do so much in each weather situation. im converting to 16 inch D90s soon, and going with the Dunlop Z1 dizzera summer tire. they really dont make that much options for the 15 inch wheels besides the all seasons. im happy with the falkens but i need more when the hot summer comes.

Do you guys have any experience w/ Bridgestone Potenza RE 960 Pole Position or G 019 Grid? Also how about Goodyear Eagle GT. I do realize they are all-season tires, but I thought maybe I should expand my search.

I'm using BFG G-Force Sports 245/50/16 front, 255/50/16 rears. I like them, have even run them on the track.

Hi Brian,

I am a big fan of Bridgestone tires. I live in the Northeast a set of G019s Grid on my my daily driver a Subaru Legacy. So far I have put 14,000 miles on them an I am very happy with them. I also their previous tire the G009 and they were great. I'd probably go with the G019 if I were going to be driving the car year round as they are great in rain and snow (its probably the next tire I'd put on my Wife's MB C320 Sport 4Matic). If you really want to stick with your stock 15s, I'd go with the Bridgestone Potenza RE 960 Pole Position. I think they are a bit more performance oriented.

But if I were putting something on a car for spring through the fall, I'd probably consider as others have suggested getting a set of 16" phone dials and getting a dedicated set of summer performance tires. Its getting harder to find great 16s, but you would still have more options. I have a set of 16" Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3s on my summer car and they are great, if I were looking now I'd probably consider a set of summer Bridgestones.

Best regards,
Dino
