I've yanked out my fog lights (only one worked) and I intend to use at least one side for airflow (PS cooling), but I would like to replace the units with a much smaller unit that can just "plug-and-play" with the existing wiring. I want it smaller so I can retain air flow-through, and I want to be able to simply wire the new lights to the old wiring (no extra stuff).
Any thoughts on what might work out?

Most of them are plug and play so no problems there....
In my opinion you have 2 options, either get a euro bumper or stuff some small rectangular lights in the lower openings of the valence. The extremities are blocked off anyway so you will have no air restriction because of that.
That way you will have no problems using your factory fog light openings as air ducts.
If you decide to go this route measure the opening in the valence and make sure you get the right size fog lights. If they won't go all the way in i think they would look very ugly, they would have to be flush with the valence to look good.

I don't have an answer to your question, but I have a question for you: are you going to fab the intake and ducting for the airflow mods, or are they available aftermarket? If available, from where?

I will be doing a night race in a couple weeks and came up with these for my 944 spec car. 4 driving lights. The rectangular ones are forward lights and the two ovals are pointed 30 sideways for apex lighting. Seems to work, but I have not had time to test on the track. You can see how small rect ones are compared to the stock foglight hole.
These will be my only lights. I am into them about $35 total incuding all the wiring.

What brand/model are those rectangular ones? Mostly I'm trying to preserve the "high-beam-flash" function. I've never had any love for fog lights.
For now, the duct holes will do nothing. I have 968 brake scoops so I do not really need more cooling there. The PS cooling was just sort of a side benefit. I cut the holes, and "hey look" there were the cooling lines. Probably not needed, but on track I'll be feeling all sorts of confidence in the temperature of my PS fluid!

Hard to say of for sure. Good enough for a 30 minute night race I figure. I do think that they are highly illegal given the angle I put them at for best in car viewing, but hey... My entire car is "for off road used only". The bulbs are 55w so nothing really crazy. Again my goal is to see forward and the apexes cheaper than stock. Last time I ran this night race I bolt back in my stock lights. However I could not adjust them very easly and given that I bolted them in manually much adjustment was gone. Also the were old and I could not see crap. It only hurt me on the last lap of the 90 mintue enduro since I was just following my competetion before then.
So this time I wanted more light going farther down the track and light for the apex. new std 7" rounds were 20 each so this 4 light set-up is cheap and better since I can more easily control the directions. The set-up is also kind of slick in that I am used a spare parts car bumper (already in red) as my "light" bumper. As such I can swap my regualar bumper for my "light" one at any time.

Nice setup Joe!
You made me remember the rally style ones that Pefa is selling.
They look great but unfortunately the price is high.

Even then at $15 I would still need to wire then up and then only have forward light. No apex lights. Plus this gets the lights a little more out of the debris path being a little higher up. Also attaching them to a spare bumper means I can swap no light to lights in 15 minutues at the track and not be able to not risk damage during the daylight practice and race sessions on the same day.

I could, but the I would need to put in false panels to block off the remaining holes. Plus those lights do work as side markers as all the rest of my lights work. I was shooting for a simple system with maximum adjustment as I would really have a chance to determine how well they are aimed until I am on track at night. I can only do so much at home in the dark.
