What would a "Modern" 944 look like??
Ok here we go. If Porsche made the 944 again today what would it look like??
I see several cars from other manufactures that have 944esque features to them. Examples:
Ferrari 599
Aston Martin DBS
Pontiac Solstice
Even the Corvette
My vote would go to the Aston Martin, and here is why.
If you look at the photo, the rear looks similar in that the body work is angled up from the rear tire to the bumper. The Aston has rear spoiler much like the 944 (albeit molded in the bodywork). The front and rear wheel wells are bulged similar to the 944 and the front end is sculpted in profile similar to the 951.
What would you guys envision a MODERN day 944 to be??

hmmm..2.0L Turbo....Front engine all wheel drive....entry level sports car.... bugs out the wazoo.... freaky engineering.... timing belt driven water pump..... getting there... Performance almost a perfect match for the 944... Made by the same engineers as the 944... Hmmmmm

Should have been left at that, the RX-8 isn't even in the same class... I currently own a 944, a 951, and an Audi TT, I bought the TT so I could have the same feel as a 944, but with a modern car (for when the P-cars are down for maintenance)...
But I do enjoy my P-cars much more than my TT...
The TT while close, is still lacking something, I guess a certain refined rawness... It is fun, but not as fun to me... Now as far as having a car with rediculous maintenance schedule, relentless bugs, And a flair for odd failures at bad times, the TT is an absolute duplication, notorious for 3rd gear selector fork (inside the transmission) FALLING OFF inside the trans, dash gauge failures, cracked coolant necks, failed water pump (yes it takes out the engine on the TT too) bad hatch supports, leaking seals, I think the biggest difference is I have not heard of anyone with a TT having problems with their heat... and the timing belt change interval is 60K miles (the factory made a printing error that MANY people payed dearly for (60K miles is roughly 100K Km, teh origional manual was printed with a timing belt change interval of 100 K Miles was just changed to 60K last fall)... I got the change notice with 92K on the origional timing belt, $1500 later I had a new T belt, new water pump, new rollers...

A modern 944 would follow the 944 economic model. Use "shared" components (VW/Audi) and sell at a price low enough that it does not impinge on the Cayman/Boxster. VW/Audi is already toying with a mid-engined car (R4) using a Boxster platform and cheaper Audi/VW drivetrains. I could see a $35,000 mid-engine car with VW's 2.0T making 250HP. Keep it simple and light.
