talking about the nissan Z cars. Is it just me or does the 350Z look like a cheap ripoff the 996...
obviously not the front but when you look at it's shape from the side it resembles a 996 to me.

I don't think it would be wise for porsche to make a entry level front engine sportscar.
why? because the japanese would have a similar car that is probably faster or equivalant for half the price. A 944 was the cheapest porsche at the time but it still cost twice as much or more than a lot of other cars that had similar specs in performance.
I don't like most new porsches anyways. The 996 looks so cheap and boring. the boxster is a girly man's car. the cayenne is for rich soccer moms.
the cayman looks alright not ugly rear end.
I kind of like the new 997 cus it looks like a newer 993.
so if they made a new 944 it'd probably look like some mutant form of the 911.
porsche now just morphs the 911 into different models. they probably scan a picture of the 911 into a computer then morph it into an SUV etc
so a new 944 will be a 911 morph and they'll just tick the engine in the front.

I do like that two door Porsche. I bet they realize the brilliance of the 944. I like this car as well....the One77 (the front could use the touch of porsche though)

OK, here's how I would see it going. First, the mid-engine layout of the Cayman/Boxster must eventually be ported over to the 911. After 60 years, it's time to give up on that compromised architecture. That would then permit the 911 range to be stretched from a base level that is an outgrowth of the Box/Cayman ($50K) right on up to the 911S, GT2, GT3, 4S, etc. Same mid-engine platform, with upgraded drivetrain and interior.
Then the Box/Cayman is reborn on a VW/Audi mid-engine platform (perhaps a derivation of the current Box/Cayman platform), using VW/Audi drivetrains. It would sell for $30-$50K. This would be the 944 successor.
I don't think it's relevant to consider a front-engined Porsche to be the 944 successor. There is no current or future front-engine, rear-drive platform at either Porsche or VW/Audi that would suit.

although it is a bit longer the A5 would be the closest candidate i can think of. the engine is mounted a little further back to help with weight distribution while still maintaining quattro capabilities..
