Post No spark at all, any ideas?

Well in an attempt to get my car going again I went to start her up today, well that fell through because the battery was dead. After I got that squared away still she won't turn over.

I checked the DME and swaped in one that I knew to be working (thanks keith) but still no spark.

Speed and reference sensors might be the culprit, or it may be the map kit, but I doubt it because it was running fine with the MAP when I parked it.

Any ideas on where I should start?

Flux capicator?

Did you pull a wire or plug to make sure that there was no spark? How did you test this?

There are only so many components in the line, work your way back. I'd go with the relay. Mine had sort of the same problem and you could do the whole tap tap thing and it would work. Test the relay, that is a easy thing to rule out.

How long has the car been sitting? I would check anything that could draw any rust like your rotor button or something like that.

Well the car had been sitting for quite, over a month, so anything that could foul up while just sitting still could def be the cause. I know it could be a lot of things, but when I know where to start that is always a nice thing.

It is not the DME relay, it may be the DME itself though...

The car will turn over, I just don't get any spark, I checked at the plugs and distributors and just nothing....

Sitting for a month and not the relay? I got $10 that says it's the triggers. Any takers?

Just a thought.

I am not sure why the speed and refrence sensors would fail just sitting there. If he was in prodding around and busted the cables or connectors, sure, but parking it for a few months should have no effect on them.

Does the car have the Facory Alarm? Was it armed while it sat? If so, and the battery goes dead, it is out of cycle. Disconnect the battery, arm the alarm, connect the battery, then disarm the alarm.

Ian,

Sorry to hear this. Wish I could be over to help, but I am at work. Double check you MAP wires to be sure your piggy back connections did not come loose. Check your fuel system by pulling the DME Relay and shorting the middle hole on the left with the bottom hole in the middle row. This will activate your fuel pump which you will hear. How did you check for spark? Have you already narrowed it down to that? Does Keith still want your car??

Dave,

I tested the spark by seeing if the spark plugs would create and arc, and there was nothing. Hopefully it is just the reference sensors and we can take care of this and get her back on her way. Also I did check all the piggy backs and everything apears to be in order.

I hope keith still want to do the swap, I'm still excited about it, I have never owned a car with real pigmentation, 4 black, 1 white, and one silver, so red will really be a change for me. Really it is the whole process that is exciting, I love big projets and this is certaily one.

Perry,
I do have the factory alarm, it has never been set and I have removed the battery before and she would still start up. I hope it is nothing to do with the alarm because i don't even have the key for it.....

Thanks all for the input....

Hmmm, the DME relay does get its activation signal from the alarm box. I was emailing back & forth with one guy about his non-start problem. Thought it was the DME relay, but a replacement didn't fix it either. So we traced the wires back to his alarm box, it was full of WATER !!! Apparently he had a corroded battery box that was dripping water down into the alarm box...

What you can do is remove the alarm box. Then make a short jumper wire to connect the black and green wires on the alarm connector. This will pass through the activation signal for the DME-relay.

Perry - that's how the speed and reference sensors typically fail - between one crank and another.
