Post 944 with salvage title?

I just found an extremely clean 86 944 with a salvage title for 2200. Is it worth a look or should i run away because of the title? California responses esp appreciated. It has 122,00 miles on it with new tires & paint. Int. is good. I have pics I could show you but do not know how to post them here.

Hmmm... A tough call. Have a ppi done. If the car is mechanically and cosmetically sound, well $2200 aint much in P-Land.
Cheers,
Chris

FYI: I got my clean-titled '86 944 for $3200. As long as you go into this with no expectation of recouping any value for "investments" into it when selling it, and the PPI is good, then go for it.

Thumbs down

It's been my experience that a Porsche with a salvage title is a little bit of a bastard in that you will probably never sell the car. It may or may not be "right" and when you go to upgrade, people can be downright insulting with their offers. I had an '84 928 with a scrap title that looked and drove perfectly but it took me 7 months to sell it for $3800. I'd hold out and spend another grand for the right car.

Salvage title + new paint = body problems, possibly major body/suspension/frame problems.

One of these (salvage OR new paint) would be enough to raise questions, but when BOTH are present, welll, IMO, I don't think it is worth pursuing this car.

Get the PPI done, and if the car is mechanically sound and the body and frame are straight, go for it.

Make sure your insurance company will insure it, and at what cost. Some companies will not insure a salvaged car.

Also, I agree with the above, you will not be able to sell the car for much, even if you put a lot of cash into it. There are several very nice salvaged cars on this very forum that you would not pass up. Hell, mine was almost a salvage, and when it is done, I am sure not many of you would turn it down.

salvage title = no resale value and possibly very difficult to insure. We all agree.

That said, keep in mind that it does NOT TAKE MUCH to call an 86 944 a total loss...hail damage would do it, broken hatch glass alone might do it, minor vandalism requiring repaint, etc. So the car might not be that terrible. You gotta inspect it to know what you're getting into.

I bought my first Porsche for $1100 bucks. It was a 79 924 with a broken odometer. I put close to 50K on it, including a couple of highspeed runs from Las Cruces to Dallas. Average speed around 95MPH. Never put it in the shop for anything, never even changed the oil for the first year. I was about 20 and clueless about cars. I sold that car for $2700.

I bought my 2nd 85.5 944 for $2200 from the dealership i worked at. It had all kinds of rattles and squeaks. I put it on a lift, tightened every screw and bolt, and proceeded to put about 45K on it. It was making chocolate milk in the overflow tank when I unloaded it to a used car dealer for $3500.

I bought my 951 about 2 years ago from a used car dealer, for $4800. It has needed tires and a clutch since then. Only about 10k on it, but this ones a keeper.

For $2200, how many other cars can you buy that could potentially give you so much pleasure? Even if it dies, you could pretty easily eBay the parts out for $2200.

I say buy it.

Get a good PPI; make sure the tech knows about the salvage title so he's looking for body problems. If it comes back OK, use the salvage title to beat the seller over the head in price negotiation. Maybe knock it down another $500... And verify insurability.

Jim, just glad to finally see some rain!

Can you wrench? If the answer is yes, go for it. I traded a ratty old 90 CRX ($1700)for my 944. It has a salvage title. When i got it, the valence, drivers side fender, nose, headlite covers, + more was buggered. It even had the wrong size tires on it and the back end was lifted to the max stock height. I have since fixed most of the body, i just need a new nose. Much thanks goes out to some friends with parts cars that let me take things at my leisure It has been fun, and fixing all of the problems has taught me a lot about cars and fixing them. Oh! The second day i had it, the tranny blew up. I found an old guy locally that GAVE me a new one. Thanks! If your on here. The car has supplied me with tons of enjoyment over the past few months, fixing and driving it. Go for it!
