Question Shop Parts Markup - How Much?

I have the car at a Porsche specialist - not a dealer. having the head and most of the motor rebuilt.

The shop's owner went over the list of parts, chain adjuster 326, chain 36 .... water pump 450 total about $1,300.

The last item was the water pump. I know he gets a markup, and he is entitled to his profit, but Sunset Imports sells the same Porsche water pump (brand new, not rebuilt) for $311 plus shipping (say 29). That is a saving of about 110 before the $37 sales tax he will charge me.

I cant expect him to warranty the parts if i supply them, but am wondering how much i can negotiate the parts and still let him make a profit.

Do local dealers charge the shop more than cost plus 15% like Sunset charges the public?

He'll make his profit on labor...

Show him the cost of all the parts from Sunset or even Paragon...and ask him to match it...

In order to make a profit a shop has to make the labor and 40% gross profit on parts. Also if the part fails more often than not he has to eat the labor. When buying from a dealer the shops usually get 15 to 25 off list, not 15 over cost.

I bought a NEW, not rebuilt, water pump for my '86 944 turbo from Ian at 944online.com for $160 US...Don't know how much more an S2 pump would be but that seems like excessive..

Remember, his parts cost is higher because he has to provide the warranty on it if it fails. Oh sure, he'll most likely get it warrantied on his end eventually, but he's got to fix your car now which will pull cash from his pocket.

I am going to pay list and stop busting chops. i can get the part for less, but he has to warrantee it.

i just have to change the mindset i had for the last twenty plus years of dealing with competent mechanics that moonlight and use the parts i supply because they know i only supply top quality parts.

the total price for parts from the shop is about $1300. which is about 500 for him to warrantee the parts.

I have been quoted anywhere from $1000 to$1800 for JUST belts/rollers/seals/WP no head work. Sounds like you are getting a pretty good deal.

Dan,
get over here so i can kick your ***! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> I took it to SM to have the o-rings done. No shop will work on the head and guarantee no oil in the coolant unless they do the o-rings again for the 4th time).

i asked around, and got three recommendations, SM, Rudtners, and Taso at RPM. All are supposed to be very honest, and very good mechanics.

Now about the butcher that worked on the head before i bought the car.....

I wonder if Roy at APV in Huntington did the butcher job for Matt at <a href="http://www.evolutionmotors.com" target="_blank">www.evolutionmotors.com</a> where i bought the car. Someone lied to me, and I am pissed. too bad i didn't freak at Matt who sold me the car when i bought the car in 00. the way i see it someone ripped me off to the tune of $2000 and counting!

it should be together on the 28th assuming the head is salvageable.

I guess at this point you will be keeping the s2 for a while longer? might as well if you are throwing money at it anyway.

basically everything i thought about the car is out the window. i am treating the motor as if it has no history. thats why im changing the water pump and rod bearings with the head. SM said the cylinders look good so i am leaving the rings alone. i am married to this car now. as long as it is working the way it is supposed to, and i have good lumbar support with my 928 seats i will be keeping it for a while, a long while, a verrry long while.

The firebird waited 27 years for the interior to be done, it can wait another year until i get around to doing it. first college got in the way, then the cpa, then law school, then student loans, then a down payment on a house, then a mortgage, then the fixing up of the engine compartment, then ... now the baby.... maybe next year. maybe the firebird will get an interior before the restoration of the body deteriorates to ****.
