Post Radar Detectors

I'll try this one more time, thanks John for pulling this up for me.

Is there anyway a person could hide a radar detector in their car (in a box in the glove box maybe?), hook the light up to the light on the gauge cluster, and hide the power switch under the dash or something? The reason I ask this is because I'm in VA and it's sort of illegal to have a radar detector.

Standard responce? With enough time, money and effort - anything's possible.

In reality, there are already remote radar detectors made (vg2 even, though there are now super guns that can sniff even thous out) where all you'd ned to do is install your LCD behind the dash. Power is on with the car - shouldn't be to much work (with the possible exception of trimming the LCD/disply small enough to make it fit where you want it). Shouldn't be TO much of an issue.....

Many years ago I had a remote mount Uniden, but no matter where I mounted the display it was too far from my sight line. I wanted to mount the remote someplace more visible because the audible alarm couln't be heard over the stereo.
The car was an 84.5 Scirocco, between the tach and the speedo there were 5 LEDs (high beam, turn signal etc.) and a second row below it with 5 dummy LEDs. I drilled out the dummies and installed 5 real LEDs, 3 yellow and 2 red), ran some telephone wire to the remote display, removed the LEDs from the unit and connected the wires from the new LEDs.
Just because the row of dummies doesn't exist on the 944 doesn't mean you cant do something like this, you could drill holes for whatever size LED you want to use somewhere where the back of the cluster is clear.

A radar detetor is ineffective if you put hide it: the radar 'rays' will not reach the detector then!

Years ago, Audi installed a remote sensor in the front: it looked like a headlamp washer unit, and had lights on the dashboard. Not sure if this was a dealer installed or factory option, but it was in Audis.

While I'll refrain from the "if you slow down - you won't need a radar detector" speech, I will say this: I have heard of VA police confiscating radar detectors from motorists and crushing them on the spot. So: if a cop pulls you over and discovers you have a concealed detector, is it worth him ripping out your dash so you can go 10mph over the limit? (You do the math!)

To clarify: if the detecting part of the detector is hidden from view inside your car, the detector will not be able to 'see' the radar. IE: the detector would have to be mounted in your car's nose, or anywhere where it would have a line of sight.

I would call SpeedSport Tuning in Connecticut. I was at an open house with them the other day, and the owner had a new M3 convertible with a hidden valentine. In his words, radar and laser can go through cloth or leather, and radar (not sure about laser) can actually go through fiberglass. He had his V1 mounted behind some plastic, with the remote display in the mirror. I think it also works because the V1 is so sensitive to begin with. I'd have to see it in action before I trusted it, but there are people out there who specialize in hiding radar detectors.

Anyway, best of luck.

Laser needs line of sight, so you would not be able to hide the photosensor (not sure what the actual component is) behind anything. VA cops use radar detector detectors, so I'm not sure how much use a hidden radar detector would be, as Z-man eluded too. Maybe you should move?

Try searching for a unit called the k40. It is expensive, (600+), but is completely hidden.

Tabor: while what you say has merit, don't forget: use of a radar detector is illegal in VA: when it comes to illegal activities and Police 'force,' all bets are off: ie: they can justify their actions by stating that they have a right to ensure that the vehicle's illegal device is properly confiscated and/or destroyed. At least that's my take on it.

Bottom line for me: if it's illegal, it's probably best not to try to beat the system. Ultimately, you loose.

I wish more people would challenge that statute in VA. American citizens have the right to recieve and monitor ANY broadcast frequency, . . you just can't unscramble them if they have been scrambled. I feel if more people would challenge it by asking for a court trial, it'd clog the system to the point that it wouldn't be advantageous for them to keep the law as such.

Same with many traffic laws. If more people would ask for a court trial, it'd effectively shut the system down.

We need some serious reform on our interstates anyway. Why in gods name are our police officers forced to pull over "speeders" while the more dangerous offenses, . . tailgating, defective equipment, failing to yeild to the right for faster traffic, etc. . . are left unchecked.

The failing to yeild thing is absolutely horrid here in Colorado.

Anyway, that was my soapbox stand. Good luck, and BTW, just get mean with 'em. Rip out the magnetron tube from a high power oven, fashion an antenna to focus the beam, and simply fry their radar units!!! It'll literally smoke the circuits.

I also agree that our traffic laws are somewhat dated and should be revamped. Until then, there's only three things you can do:
1. Shut up and abide.
2. Break laws and suffer the potential consequences
3. Make a difference and petition the courts to change the laws.

I'm with D. Autry on this! POWER TO THE PEOPLE! <img border="0" alt="[king]" title="" src="graemlins/r.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[soapbox]" title="" src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" />

You can buy conceal kits for a V1.

On the subject of detector detectors. It is my understanding that the best detector detector is the stalker. And you have to have one something like 5 ft. from the V1 before it registers anything. If and when I go through VA my V1 is going in the glove box and then I am safe.

Kool-

If that's true then that's kick ***. I don't know much about the radar detector detectors...just that the cops use them. Man I wish I had a V1! I've got a Passport.
