944 S2 engine swap
Hi,
As one can see from my signature, I have been working on my S2 as the engine blew. Fortunately I managed to find a 968 lump with less than 70tml on the clock and best of all ; it came with all the goodies.
This was the reason I did not want to start rebuilding this engine:
Then one day the local courier called and brought me this:
Only things I had to do was change the S2's crossmember to the 968 engine and install new hydraulic mounts as the old ones were a bit worn out:
Also we installed the flywheel and clutch from my S2 engine. While at it, it would have been stupid not to change the pilot bearing too. Assembly of the bellhousing was easy but we had to use the S2's reference sensor mounting and the sensor itself from 968.
As my crane was not the most optimal to the task I had to practise the lift a couple of times but once we figured out the tricks the engine slided nicely into the engine bay. After this the procedure was text-book stuff:
Next steps are to install new waterpump, chain tensioner pads, new belts and rollers and finialize the assembly. Along the way came a full 951 M030 brakes, hubs and rear axle.. Well I don't need those to be street-legal (S2 has same brakes as 968) but hey.. c'mon - bigger brakes? Can't go wrong with them
To keep me busy for the rest of the winter I bought a A/C set from one parted 951 ; but that's another story.

It was planned from the beginning to use full 968 setup. There is no variocam control nor support for MAF in the stock S2 DME. The engine delivery was full spec'd like from MAF to exhaust manifold and full wiring + DME.
If there hadn't been such package available I'd bought a totaled 968 so I would have all the parts available I need... But this turned out better I suppose.

Jake, FYI I still have a 968 DME around here somewhere for sale if you need one. It worked when I put it on the shelf a few years ago. It was a spare when I did my engine swap (944s3).
Looks good -- GOOD LUCK! You will LOVE the power band of the 3.0L Variocam in the 944 body. It's intoxicating because you know it's a 20 year old naturally aspirated 4 banger that still can hold it's own.

..continues. Today we installed the oil cooler and front suspension. The streeting mechanism was a 'bit' tricky as there is one allen bolt that connect the pipe to power steering fluid cooler(?) and it's difficult to tighten... Desptite that things fall nicely into place. It's a good thing I took extra care of each nut and bolt when disassembling the car and I recommned to have PET and WSM at hand all time.
One question to fellow S3/968 owners: Where does the two temperature sensor connectors go in M44.43 engine, I did not find those (which are in the S2 wiring harness).
