Default Snow tires are freaking awesome

So today I had my first chance to use snow tires (dunlop wintersport irrc) as we have been getting freezing rain all night/day and my god they are AWESOME. The 06 GMC Sierra SLT had trouble getting up my driveway, my moms AWD Vibe had trouble.. but the 951 shot right up with minimal wheel spin - going backwards up my steep driveway! I'm sold on using winters from now on

2 years ago I was driving a 84 n/a with decent all seasons.. it wasn't too bad but you had to be pretty careful and have momentum to get up a steep hill (like my driveway) the next year was those same all seaons but bald and winter was a huge PITA. I was worried the 951 was going to be a handful this winter but now I can't wait till we get some real snow

all seasons suck at everything. they just suck less than the incorrect tire for the weather.

I've got a set of Dunlop Wintersport M3s that should be showing up today. With true snows and a limited slip diff, the GLi is almost unstoppable in the winter....barring any deep snow drifts.

Studdless snows are the only way to go during winter in the north.

Welcome to the Dark Side young Skywalker.

There's nothing more priceless than the look of a sports car weaving through two lanes of people in SUV's that can't move because you have the right tires and they don't.

Stay safe.

As for the rest of you non-believers, we still have them left. Use the Force.......

Just remember that you are risking your Porsche to the whims of the great unwashed on all season tires.

that's the problem when u love yer car too much. in a collision, whether you are the collider or the collidee, you still lose.

Indeed. I still remember pulling away from a stop on a hill to pass a Land Rover that was spinning all four wheels.

The downside, of course, is when you live in an area like I do that can get sudden and freak weather changes. My snow tires were downright useless sitting in my garage when it went from "warm" to "Oh ****, three inches of snow!" without any warning and I had to go somewhere on my summer tires. Not fun.

Yeah, but it's not nearly as much fun when you don't want to go sideways, especially in traffic!

it was priceless when we were going up the NYS thruway towards killington in the legend coupe with skis on the roof and pilot alpins on all 4. we drove past a few tough guys in SUVs stuck on the side of the road.

That wasnt as nice as when we had artic alpins on the aurora in a blizzard in NY. going over the triborough bridge with an escalade next to us. we watched the thing slide sideways as we just plowed along. got into and out of NYC while my brother was stuck on the LIE in the FWD old minivan on all seasons. he was 1/3 of the way from a diner and we agreed to meet at the diner. I left NYC and pulled into the diner a minute before him. we didnt make it to the affair we were supposed to be at. and my cousin is still pissed. oh well.

i got my lovely wife an early birthday present last month. a set of michelin snows for her XC90. she liked em driving over vail pass last weekend. i have yoko snows on the BMW. almost as quiet as the dunlop 8000s i use in the summer.

it is the same $$ to drive half the year on snows and half on summer tires than all year on crappy all seasons.

Great post! I've bought my winter tires from Tirerack for many, many years. (Though this year, the sales tech seemed incredulous that the rears wear out twice as fast on my 911...)

Last year I remember coming up fast on a cop who was sliding around... I had to be very well behaved so I didn't pass him "doing the speed limit". For sure he would have given me a ticket.

yea chicago weather's being its wierd normal self this winter. on tuesday i came to work needing an umbrella...and left work early sweeping the snowstorm off my car. in any other city, that would have been abnormal...but here we are in chicago. the city of "4 seasons in a day" where it can drop 40 degrees during a day.
