Default 944 to a Miata?

I know someone will complain about this not being technical, but I didn't get any replies in the 944 forum.

I've decided to give up my 944. I love the car, but it's been a hassle since I've been back. It's spent more time sitting inop, then it has in a drivable condition. So in the interest of my sanity and wallet I'm selling it. I would however like a weekend toy, as my TDI Golf doesn't do much for the heartrate. I've thought about another 944, but spending a little bit more money to make sure I get a good one. I've also thought about a Miata. I know a Miata has a gay image, and none of the 'prestige', but it's a great little car. Plus it's a lot cheaper to maintain, which would be huge for me. I still want to race 944's, but that's down the road. Is it a reasonable jump between the two cars?

I love my 944.

There is also a reason that I my Miata is funtioning both as my daily driver and main track flogger. They are, on the whole, simply more reliable, less expensive and easier to wrench on than the 944. I hate to say it but it's true... even though my Miata was a money pit early on, now that I've gotten things sorted out it's pretty much bulletproof.

I have also found that with equal modification, both cars drive and perform similarily, both on the track and the street. The 944 has more stick and grunt, but the Miata has more tossability, so it's all a wash.

The 944 is more comfortable and has more space, although since you ahve your Golf such things are probably not important.

The "gay" thing is a lame, stupid thing perpetuated by those who are ignorant. Besides, my Miata has drawn more female attention than either the 944 or the 911 (when I was babysitting it) ever has. The Porsches have drawn male attention... which is really the better gay car?

Considering how much trouble you've had with your 944, I'd recommend swapping it for a Miata. Yeah, it may not have the prestige of an economy, Audi-built Porsche, but I'll take a less fancy, fun car that I can drive over a fancier car that sits in it's parking space, awaiting for the next repair.

That said, I love my 944.

Ok, enough bashing the 944. Here's a thread I posted a few years ago comparing the two: https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ight=advantage

I have said it more than once, I love my 944, but my Audi TT Quattro is a suitable substitute when the 944 is in for maintenance, same drive ability and a decent car can be had for less than a decent 944 (I go mine 5 months ago with 76K on the clock for around 12,000)

That being said, the TT is being prepped for trade in on a 09 A4 for the wife to haul the kids in, and my next buy is going to be a clean 951...I love my Porsche in a way the Audi can never be loved by me....

S2000 is a bit more expensive than a Miata though.

Who said miatas are gay?

Sorry, I couldn't resist! But no offense meant. I actually like miatas. If you can swing an S2000, though, those are a lot of fun.

I'm not one of the idiots spouting the whole "miatas are gay!" thing. I don't even care what people say (I'm in the Army, which proves I'm gay!). I've just heard knowledgeable car people sometimes say the image is a detractor.

An S2k would be awesome, I loved driving my dads, but I still owe $10k on the Golf so I would rather not undertake a large car payment. I would love to buy another 944, because to be honest I do really love driving it. I need to go test drive another Miata, see if my memory is as good as I think it is. I really just want a fun weekend car I can take to the AutoX and track days and enjoy. I'm sick of having to think "Oh is the window going to roll back up?" or "Hm, why won't it start this time". Great compro BB! The more I think about it the more I think I would really like to buy another 944. I figure around $5k is my price limit. I figure this could net me a solid 87 or 88 944, or a good 97 or so Miata.

I don't like the look of the older miatas. The 2000 ish miatas look pretty nice but I still don't like the fact that they are tiny little convertibles. If newer miatas had a coupe version I'd definately consider one.

my 944 has also been down on many occasions such as right now needing pretty major / expensive repairs compared to most other cars.

I have spent so much blood and sweat, and money working on my 944 and fixing it up so I don't think I'll ever sell it. I might get another newer car though.

I also like the audi tt.

For practical purposes, go with the newest car you can afford (that you like). That will probably serve you best in the long run.

Go ahead and sell the 944, and get a miata.
Don't forget to leave your ***** in the glovebox when you sell the 944.

Kidding, kidding, they're great cars. Very 944-like.
