Rear hatch problem

I have an issue with the rear hatch on my '89 944 S2. The rear hatch will release when using the button by the drivers seat, but will not work with the key in the rear lock. It doesn't look like turning the key does anything besides push down on a metal tab on a relay/microswitch.
Does that mean the microswitch is bad since the motors work when activated by the button? Could there be another problem?

Is that the correct replacement part? Thanks.

You got it. The key turns a tab to trigger the microswitch. It's a pretty common failure.
I'm guessing the release switch you found at vertex is the one in the driver's footwell, since there's an application for the early cars, which didn't use the microswitch in the hatch. Hard to be sure without a pic.
You need Part # 944.624.030.00
When it stopped working on my 968, I just put in a keyless entry. All the wires were already in place; makes you wonder why they didn't just put them in at the factory.
Take a look on the 968 forums for the keyless entry DIY. it's pretty easy.

Is the hatch supposed to "pop" up a bit when you hit the button or use the key? My button does not work, but the key will if you lift the hatch with key turned. For clarification, does that mean my switch is bad, the latch is bad, or does the latch just need adjustment?

Mine does not pop up when I hit the button. Can you hear the latches releasing around the hood pins? If you can hear the latches but they dont fully release they probably need some sort of adjustment. Which model and year of car do you have? On my '89 S2 all the key does is hit a microswitch and activate the motors. Other models have a physical connection to the key that opens the latches.

My rear hatch has never released via the driver side button. While pressing the button I would hear something trying to happen.
My friends 951 hits his driver side release button and the hatch unlocks and will completely lift open by itself.
