Why is a Clutch So Expensive?

Check this out; looks like Krystar's idea of shorter flywheel bolts with a Ford disc has gone commercial:

I just got my sachs clutch relined at a local clutch shop...I think it was 90 out the door, but the thing looks brand new. They even had 944 clutch kits on hand so they knew precisely what compound to use for the relining.

From: one thousand, five hundred miles north of Ft. Lauderdale for the summer.
besides the pain of the 8 hours ++ of labor,
with all the parted cars out there why are clutches with low miles not being exchanged more around here ?
i got a clutch with only 48 K on the clock thrown in with other parts in a nice package.
can that ford disc be used in a 968 too ?

Edit: A further thought; I see the outfit in Atlanta is selling "rebuilt" discs and PP's on eBay. It bothers me that there is no exchange program on PP's or discs. I know of no other component that costs $200+ that this is the case. The clutch shop tells me the diaphragm springs cost them about $5, but he can't get them for these clutches. Relining and replacing springs on the discs is (as shown above) less than a hundred bucks. What's going on here??

That works if you already have a spring-center clutch to reline; if you are replacing a rubber clutch, not so much. I talked to my local clutch shop, it appears they can take a Ford clutch that is correct diameter, spline, etc but wrong offset and rebuild it with spacers to correct the offset.
That guy on ebay can suck it!

I know this is an ancient thread, but it seems to be one of the top hits for googl'ing a ford Ranger clutch into a Porsche 944.
We tried replacing the clutch in our '83 944 with the sach disc for a 1986 v6 Ranger. Unfortunately, it did not work. As advised above, we replaced our triple square flywheel bolts with M10 1.25 pitch 20mm grade 10.9 bolts. This left us with ~ -3mm of clearance between the clutch disc springs and the bolt heads. From here we started grinding. After grinding down the bolt head by nearly half (bolt head height down to 3.5-4mm), there still was negative clearance between the Ranger clutch disc springs and the flywheel bolts.
To make matters worse, the drive shaft spline engagement on the Ford Ranger disc was concerning to us. Although the clutch disc did successfully engage the splines of the drive shaft, it was not full engagement. Impossible to say exactly how much engaged, but it wasn't full like the stock Porsche disc.
This is just our findings. Perhaps there are different versions of the Ford Ranger disc and we happened to get an incompatible one - or maybe our flywheel was shaved down once in the past - I don't know. Next time we go through this we might try the Mitsu or Dodge Ram 50 4wd disc instead.

if you go with a turbo bellhouse/flywheel/pressure plate, the turbo sport disc is $120 new.
that said...it shouldnt be that hard to find a used spring-center 944 clutch disk to reline.

I monitored ebay over the preceding year for a deal on a clutch. I was fortunate to find a Sachs complete clutch from an '86 that had only 100 miles on it before the seller's car got T-boned. I can't believe that I got it for $100. Replacing it, including the clutch fork bearings and pulling the transaxle was fairly involved but definitely the way to go. The "while you're in there" list included, changing the Transaxle fluid, servicing CV joints, changing the rear main seal (which was leaking) and new short shifter from only944.com.

Fixed.
I think if people were more mechanically inclined or at least willing to learn we would see a lot more of these cars on the road. It not as hard as people make it out to be. Dougs951S and I can bust a clutch job in less than 4 hours, taking our time.

the 944 upper rad hose and the heater core hoses are used on fords too, so why not a clutch?
