Default Why is a Clutch So Expensive?

I need to change the clutch on my car and I own a 300zx and a Lexus SC300 With 2jzgte and the clutch is very cheap compared to this old porsche! I bought a clutch kit for both my other cars for around 280 each and they were stage 3 clutchs from Exedy! This Porsche clutch costs $520 and laber people charge is rediculous, $800+ for a clutch replacment! So why is it that a OEM sach clutch for a porsche costs almost 3 times as much as any other clutch for a car? And Is there a clutch kit for around $300 or less for this car?

limited parts production numbers coupled w/ over hiped difficulty makes parts and labor on these cars high. That being said, $800 is less than half of most shops labor to do a clutch.

You can get a centerforce disk only from performance products for under 300, which is what I did last time because the PP was in perfect condition.

why are they so expensive? could be they are somewhat limited in production #s. As for the labor, after you do one, you understand why someone would charge a decent amount of $$. Its not particularly difficult in theory, but you will run into lots of hang ups the first time that will slow you down.

Ok thanks! So what have you guys seen out there for a cheap cluthc kit? Lowest I found was on Ebay for around $451!

Also my gears seem to be sloppy when I shift! Is that due to the clutch being out? What I mean is when I shift up the trans seems to grind on the gears and seems as if it just shoved into a gear! Same as if I am driving and I get off the accelerator and then back on I hear the gears grind as it engages again!

First of all its a porsche. Second of all German cars use german parts suppliers who use the euro as their currency. Compared to the euro, the dollar sucks right now, and since a lot of the parts are imported the parts are going to be expensive.

The labnor issue is simply because of the design. TO do the clutch you need to remove the rear suspension assembly to start with. Its very time consuming just to change a clutch, and I have a feeling that they are money maker jobs for the techs. Everyone knows its a pain in the *** to do, so when they quote you 15 hours of labor, no one blinks an eye. I have feeling that the good techs can do the job in 6 hours or less.

451 is about as cheap as I've seen. You'll still need a $110 throw out bearing and a $15 pilot bearing, and most people would say to replace the needle bearings on the clutch fork.

As for the sloppy shifter, search, there was a thread I just saw pop up that discussed this.

ive heard people say you need to remove the intake and rear suspension to do this but ive done them in 4-6 hours w/ intake and suspension in place- still rather pulll the motor though.

I've wondered that myself.

Is it easier to pull the engine to do the clutch...or the transaxle?

Also, why would you have to remove the intake?

I have a lift I put it in the air, pulled CVs, transaxle, then drive shaft. Then I carefully removed the bellhousing and changed the clutch. I refuse to follow Porsche directions of first remove the license plate. Forget that!!! I spent like $1200 on a clutch all in all. replacing the pilot bearing and pressure plate and clutch.

Thanks for the link but my shifter is fine! It's when I shift my trans feels like it's loose, sort of grinding into gears! Is this beacuse I have no clutch left or is my trans going out on me?

Well, informative thread -- but no real reason why this disc is so expensive.

Limited production -- I call bs -- the 968 disc is less expensive -- almost 1/2 the price of the 944 NA disc! The 90's 911 turbos' disc is cheaper?!? The exchange -- more bs -- these rates don't tell the story either -- look at any Excellence mag from 5+ years ago and the 944 disc is still silly expensive. So -- the question remains unanswered -- why so expensive? What is different with this disc?

Anyone have the dimensions of this disc -- there HAS to be another disc out there that comes close in dimensions.

I have my shops laptop with me at home this weekend and looked up specifics....

Labor hours; 10.9
Clutch Disc; $643.19

I know it doesn't take 11 hours(or 16 as Porsche quotes) to do the job. I've done it a few times at work and takes anywhere from 6-8 hours... as for the cost of the clutch that's list price and I know we pay a lot less. When I got the parts for mine I paid around $400 including disc & all bearings.

I think this shop you went to is charging a fair price at $800 for the labor, it's the parts that can get you.

Edit:

Looked up the price of the 968 clutch disc and it's listed at $330.06. Very strange and no clue why such a price difference. Only thing I can come up with is it's time to buy a 968 and sell the 44!
