Post Stoneguards made of black magnetic stuff-- pics!

Take a gander at this, my lads and ladies:

These are prototypes, I have more raw stock and will be refining them.

Comments welcome

If by "They" you mean you, then, yes, they probably do. I got the raw materials at Dick Blick Art Supply. I know they have white. How Alpine it is, I can't say.

cheers

Thad - awesome.

Too bad the lower valence isn't magnetic. Maybe you could put some really powerful magnets on the inside if you were to go on a long trip? Just a thought.

What/where is "Dick Blick Art Supply?" In English please.

If you don't mind, price? And is this stuff metal? or like that plastic/metal magnetized stripping only bigger?

Could you use a router bit to cut it and give it a finished rolled edge appearance?

Dick Blick is online, do a google search. They sell stuff to insane earless painters, etc.

It is like the refrigerator magnet stuff. It's sold by the foot, 2 feet wide, I bought 10 feet (used half, lotsa waste), spent 40 bucks plus shipping.

They have about 10 colors, but they're all 'primary' colors-- no subtlety.

Cut to shape with scissors.

I made extra chunks for the portion of the quarter panels just behind each wheel well, where the transparent stuff from the factory is, but it doesn't stay put well. The thickness of the factory film prohibits a strong magnetic bond. On the nose, and on the sections just fore of the rear wheels, it seems to stick fine (either no clear stuff interfering, or big enough surface area). Anyways the crescents I cut out for aft of the wheels made the wheel wells look BIG and the tires look SMALL. Probably an aesthetic problem unique to black.

It's already saved some wear and tear on my paint, as I've been fighting with various hoses and clamps in parking lots. Slight scratches in the black plastic. Better than a scratch in the paint, however..

Man that is "Da bomb"!! Another "why-didn't-I think-of-that" idea. My car is black and I need to replace those rear quarter guards. If I could just "stick" those things on... Better get a patent on that stuff Thaddeus. I remember you asking if anyone knew where to get sheets of that magnetic stuff...now I see what you were up to!! Just wonder if it will hold up to the full throttle test???

Thaddeus, yes - excellent thinking. I don't care if it passes the speed test, I care if it keeps door dings away for those times when you just can't avoid parking in a lame mini spot. You might get them stolen but mostly it will just keep your car free from "Grocery Store Pinstriping"

Let's just say I've had no issues at legally posted speeds and leave it at that.

As far as getting a patent, dont. I saw the same stuff in excellence magazine. It was pre-cut for 911s. Oh well.

Worst comes to worse I'll have em painted if they don't match decently...I assume there is paint out there that flexes OK? (perry?)

Where exactly on <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/" target="_blank">http://www.dickblick.com/</a> should I be looking? It's not my fault im <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> ...

What's all that dirt on your licence plate? Are you doing something illegal?

The shields look great, and would save the price of a new front-end paint job for me. Let us know when you get them perfected.

You saw something like it in Excellence? No kidding? Crap. Oh well. So much for my bright idea. How much they charging?

The raw stock is here:

<a href="http://www.dickblick.com/zz289/21/products.asp?ig_id=2800" target="_blank">http://www.dickblick.com/zz289/21/products.asp?ig_id=2800</a>

Hope the link works. If not, search on 'magnetic', it should be the 2d or 3rd result down.

cheers

Thaddeus

PS I'm not sure why I bothered to obscure the license plate. Everybody else does when they post pics of their rides, so I figure there must be a reason. Lemming mentality....
