I had a 1.8T Passat and it was OK. Not a lot of low end torque so it took some clutch abuse to get a good start. I suspect with a bigger turbo that gets worse. I would guess that 250whp, maybe 275 could be done reliably for only about the cost of a nice 951 and lots and lots of hard work :-) Yeah there are high HP 1.8T's out there but $$$$ and <kaboom!>

944 + 1.8T motor + GT28 or whatever + 951 trans + standalone or lots of work with the 1.8T ECU + custom exhaust work... and adapters (bellhousing, motor mounts...)

$3000 + $1500 + $1500 + $600-$1000 + $1000 + $350 + ?

Probably $10K at least plus lots of labor.

I do like the (drive by wire) 1.8T ECU and boost control. Wideband, MAF, MAP and BARO as well as the usual temp sensors, etc. The right way to do a turbo engine.

If you like it, build it! It'd be cool. Seems weird to put in a smaller engine to me though.

Is the 1.8T in question a drive-by-wire or drive-by-cable? Some of the older Audi 1.8T's had throttle cables and I hear are much easier to swap into earlier VW cars. The same would hold true for a complete transplant.

one time i saw pictures of someone who had an ENORMOUS turbo on their 1.8 and was boosting something like 40 lbs and the result was a 4" hole in the oilpan and a crank in several hundred pieces

id really have to search for it but i will

It's kinda ironic with these 1.8T's. They are plagued with the same issues at the 944 engines are. Crappy and too many vac. lines, OE BOV's are crap, timing belts that when break (granted after 90k) bend anywhere from 4-20 valves, and dozens of temp sensor TSB's; among other sensor related issues (throttle body adaptations, etc.).

Trust me, I am as anxious to see the outcome of this swap myself. It's just after working on these things, they have a lot of the same issues, for the same cost of repair. All the 1.8T's in any Audi/VW I ever drove were too laggy for me, even on the TT Quatros. But that can be made better as we all know.

Good luck with the swap, and document/take pictures. This will be a great project!

And i bet if you need anything machined, Sharky could do it.... wherever he is

And you'll probably get really good fuel economy if you run a 951 or 968 tranny

The engine from the Audi and Passat is NOT transverse. I think the block and head came out to 260 lbs with all the accessories attached. I will have to weigh the block again to make sure.

Both engines are about 28" tall straight up. The Por engine is approx 28" long and the VW is 18" long with all the pulleys on. So I think there will be a lot of room.

The 1.8T Stock Turbo is a joke it is only designed to help assist the engine to make it almost 100% effiecient as far as air flow goes. I don't know where VW gets their engine designers from but they have always designed a good base engine but the crap bolted on to it was another story. I can speak from experience since i use to work for VW Motorsport Asia. I use to grumble with the VW/Audi engineers all the time.

Does anyone have a 924 Bellhousing? maybe a picture of it? I havent worked on a 924 in 25 years so I can't remember the shape. Woulds be nice if bolted right up to the Audi engine which has the same layout as all the VW watercooled engines.

I would probably go with a a Megasquirt ECU since I have a bunch of them.

The first time, it is. Then, you get used to it and want to go faster...

only 18" long? with all that spare room you could make the world's first 3.6L TT straight-eight lol

For my sub $10k conversion, I just bought one of the last pieces I am missing... a BDS 671 blower along with all accessories.

I bet the porsche 2.5 l turbo engine sounds nicer than a 1.8t. The 1.8t doesn't sound very porsche like.

also modding the 1.8t with crazy high boost to get more power, i'm sure that will reduce the life of the motor by a lot.

i'd rather have a 8 cylinder installed in a 944, like maybe the audi v8 (A8 motor?).

Audi put a K04 turbo on the 1.8t in the TT (I owned it) and it put out a stone-cold reliable 225HP. A chip could add 50HP without much risk. It's a turbo-laggy motor, but I'm told it lags a lot less than a 951.
