Default Anyone use undercoating for gravel guard?

i used the sem textured paint and it came out smooth.

not pleased at all. i also have a can of undercoating that i used inside the fender. anyone use that? the results cant be much worse.

anyone have experience using undercoating on the outside as gravel guard? How was the texture?

BTW, rustoleum red is just a shade darker than guards red. not bad in the garage since i did all the gravel paint. after i re do the fender gravel area and shoot it again i will get a shot of it in the light.

if your rockers look bad, tape up the area above the gravel guard and shoot it with the rustoleum enamel. krylon may be a better match though.

do no used undercoating!!! There is a product from 3M that is a rock guard spray and it dries hard. This is what you need unless you use the Body Shutz that i believe they also make but ive never used that. Follow the instructions and put it on much heavier than you would think and then sand it down just slightly to get the right effect. Done this a couple times now.

3M Rocker Panel Spray 051131-05910 Medium to course texture. Depending on distance from surface will dictate the texture

one light tack coat then one coat at distance for desired texture dont feel like you have to "paint" the full surface your primer will show through major thing is texture if i recall it is about 1 hour to dry before sealer / top coat no need to primer over it but i would defainately put sealer over it to replicate the factory finish

the greater the distance the more course around 14-15 inches will match the porsche texture one tack and 2 wet is a good match

THANKS for bringing this up. I have a small amount of surface rust starting right behind the front tires. I was going to apply POR-15, then the Wurth undercoating I have.

Dan- besides the 3M Rock Gard, what else is needed? It's saying to use with a $60 spray gun and epoxy primer...I have no idea if that's compatible with POR-15.

yellow,
that's where mine is. i ended up shooting the whole rocker with rustoleum red enamel after i put a piece from a good fender in back of the rusty area and blended it with body filler. the color match isnt bad since it is the gravel paint, and it is clean. my problem is i sprayed the rock guard too heavy and too close.

just as an FYI most paint supplyers will mix a color and put it in a spray can for you that includes the Oreillys that mix paint no need to try to find a spray can that is close

i was going to do that. i wanted to see what a 3.99 can would look like and i was surprised how close. granted there is a sharp line where the flat stops and the gravel starts. i maked it pretty well and you really have to look to see. just being red looks a lot better than it did before with the gravel paint not wearing evenly from years of abuse, etc.

I usually strip the old rocker guard off w/ a razor- sand the area down and primer w/ either self etching primer or eurethane primer. Let the primer dry well, scuff w/ some light grit 180/220 sand paper and put two coats of rocker guard on- both at about 6-10" away from the panel. Pull the tape back and compare texture to the rest of the car and either apply more or let dry and lightly sand just to knock the edge off the new rocker guard spray. Then apply some eurethane primer/or in this case some rattle can primer- and then spray w/ red/clear.

dan how do you blend two different pieces? the texture on the rocker is much different than what i sprayed. i was so dissatisfied i wiped it all off a few times till i got the point that i had to move real fast with this stuff or it runs. grain is much bigger than the rest of the car, but the next owner can fix it.

i see you didnt do the rear quarter in your picture. is there a visible break in the texture?
