Default Looking for Oil temp drain plug

Can't figure out how to come across one of these after scouring the net and old Rennlist posts. Anyone have a spare they want to sell or know exactly what Subby drain plug and sender I need? Just looking for something I can slide a connector onto and run a wire into the cabin for a VDO guage.

Is that the best place to get a temp from? Isn't it getting cooled off pretty well at that point?

For ~$30-$40 you can get the oil filter adapter, which uses NPT fittings, and you can get pressure + temp from it... (two seperate fittings).

I had a hard time finding one too. Just happened to luck out when ST was selling one with a broken VDO sender. I think it was about $10 and saved me the trouble of drilling and tapping it myself. North Hollywood speedometer hooked me up with a new sender and the proper gauge. FWIW you may want to start with a gauge that provides the range and resolution your looking for and then source the matching sender.

I have a drain plug that is drilled for the sender but am reusing the sender elsewhere. Let me know...you would have to buy a sender.

Hey Sam - Would have a link to where the exact sender I would need is? Would something like this work?

http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/3588/VDO323057/

or this

The first looks like it would fit...mine was a 1/8" Sender. Here is an old pic before the sender was screwed in all the way:

To answer your question, no it's not the best but I think it's a pretty good solution to tapping into the block. That's why I run my sender in that location

At auto-x events, my gauge reads nearly the same sitting in the grid before a run and immediately after a run. Obviously it climbs a bit as I push it, but it doesn't "cool" dramatically while the car is in motion.

That being said, it does read much lower while cruising down the freeway, but then again the load on the engine is fair less than while full throttle at an event.

Sorry for the long-winded yammering.

For about $8 you can get a 1/8" NPT tap and drill bit combo at Northern tools (I'm sure other places as well). The NPT tap takes a non-standard drill-bit size (It's like a letter "S" or "R" size) so unless you have an extensive drill-bit set it;s best to buy the combo with both in it. Takes about 5 minutes to turn your drain plug into a drain plug that will take the sender.
The engine sump is where you want to measure oil temp. I used the blank plug on the driver's side so I don't have to mess with the sender when I change oil. Do all 944's have this other plug? I don't know...
Cheers
Randy

Have you considered a sandwich plate?

Seems like there is too little room for the filter as it is now let alone adding another inch of height? Does anyone have pics of a plate installed on a 944?

I use one. No pics though. I replaced the oil pan sender with it. There was a group buy on the senders a while back. One of the listers made a bunch of them. The plate actually makes the oil filter easier to get to, so oil changes are a bit more convenient. As well, moving the filter 1" away from the exhaust manifold is not a bad thing in my book.

I ran up to the garage and snapped a pic. I personally think the plate is a better solution than the pan drain plug.

Where did you get the plate from, is it an ebay special?

I think this was the vendor I used on ebay. The unit I received was a very high quality piece. I was very skeptical, but was very pleased once I received the unit. No leaks, perfect fitment, allowed me to keep the stock oil pressure sender/gauge while using more accurate pressure & temp gauges.
