Default Replacing shift boot and ****

How easy is it to replace the 944's shift boot, ****, and top pattern cap ? I found a buch of places that sell it as one whole unit. Is it really easy ?

Yep, just pop the plastic frame out, remove the small clip, and pull the **** off.

It's number two in this picture:

Just pull the boot up and look at the base of the ****. it will be there. It's what hold the know onto the lever.

How sloppy is the shifting? If it seems even a bit sloppy then go ahead and replace the shifter too. #1 in that diagram. It's not hard to do and the improved feel makes the car that much more enjoyable. You'll probably want to replace the shifter "seat" as well, #10.

When I did mine I only bought the boot and working with the leather was a bit of a PIA...the whole kit you are looking at would be very easy as the actual removal and install of the **** was easy.

last time i bought a replacement shift boot, the damn boot leather like isnt big enough. when you shift from first to second or into reverse, the boot will snap off of the edging. its like its just not big enough and with enough "boot baggy" to let you row through all the gears with slack to spare.

i bought the boot from performance products 3-4 years ago. never really troubleshooted it since. just put up with it.

See how its actually unsnapped around the edges in this pic. I need to snap it down. WTF is wrong?

My '93 got a brand new shift boot right before we bought it, and at the time when we bought it it was already shrinking and coming off at the base. I think it would help if you use a windshield shade and maybe leather conditioner (both preventive measures).

Kinda laughed when I read this. I just installed a new shift boot from Performance Products not too long ago and actually almost had too much excess material. It's pretty bunched up around the base. I don't mind, but still kinda funny about your issue.
