OK this is getting stupid! $2400 for a timing belt job?

Default OK this is getting stupid! $2400 for a timing belt job?

Well got another call from my mechanic stating that something else was wrong. Whats new. I find this highly dubious as the car has only been driven for about 4,000 miles over the last four years and is superbly taken care of.

He says another part is bad and I've never heard of it cracking. Here is the name of the part and part number. Has anybody ever heard of this happening? Its cracked. How the hell does a non wear part crack at the point where the bolts go in?

The part number is 944-105-179-08 and Porsche's description is "toothed belt covering."

I'm expecting another call soon stating that my "Johnson valve is bad and its going to cost 2k to replace"

No he said its a "magnesium" cover that bolts on. I've never heard of this. He says it has stress cracks and that if it breaks pieces of magnesium will go into the timing belt and rollers destroying the motor.

Has anybody heard of this part? I thought the cover was plastic as well.

pfft. JB weld it, or leave it. It can get cracked due to ham-fisted mechanics, or prying on it, or dropping it...

They said its the magnesium housing behind the distributor. They had to go in there to change a seal and they noticed it was cracked.

Yeah, a used one from them is $300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A new one is $575!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

airflite, how can that be cracked during normal wear and tear? Please help me out here. They are sending me emails that I don't know what I'm talking about and that the part needs to be replaced.

See item #24 below, can buy it used from various places for less than $50, new for $180 or you can just use JB Weld as Joel says above, it's not a stressed part, your mechanic probably broke it taking everything apart.

The timing belt job should not cost you more than $1000 including parts, or less than $200 if you borrow the tools and spend about 4 hours doing it yourself.

sorry I posted the wrong pic, mike put up the right one

anyway, I don't know about availability, dcauto doesn't have one in stock.

this part is different from the n/a, its an S2 part.

as far as getting screwed, thats why I do my own work, anytime u go to the mechanic ur getting screwed IMHO.

I paid about $1500 for Timing Belt, Water Pump, Balance shaft tensioners/rollers placed (some), etc. That was using 'their parts', which are only genuine OEM parts. Also includes a 'free' retension at 1k miles.

I can't help on the technical side, but on a related matter, what do you know about this mechanic? I know in some areas a good honest mechanic, much less a good honest Porsche mechanic, is hard to find. I wouldn't trust anyone to work on my car without good first-hand recommendations from other 944 owners and/or a good reputation in the p-car community. Even honest mechanics who haven't worked on a 20 y.o. 944 won't know half of what he's looking at when he opens your hood, and they'll also have a hard time admitting it and will wing it. No thanks.

Your guy sounds like a yo yo or a crook, sorry to say.

I would bet they cracked it themselves taking it apart. They stated it had stress cracks, I would question if it really was cracked or if it was just the normal flashing lines left over from casting. I call BS on this one. It is not a part that sees enough stress to crack with normal use.

Did they actually tell you that you do not know what you are talking about?!?

Is the car at that shop now taken apart? If so have a look for yourself, take a close up pic of the cracks and post it here. If the car is back together then get it out of there and find a knowledgable shop with reasonable prices to inpect that part. You really should get a second opinion on this from an outside party that can see this in person.

Should have mentioned, click on the prices above and you will find that www.dcauto.com has used ones for $50 and www.944online.com has new ones for $180
