Even honest mechanics who haven't worked on a 20 y.o. 944 won't know half of what he's looking at when he opens your hood, and they'll also have a hard time admitting it and will wing it. No thanks.

Your guy sounds like a yo yo or a crook, sorry to say.
Exactly!!

MANY things are unique to our cars and almost any of the generic repair shops would not have a clue what to look for. Repairing something that is broken on ANY car should be no problem to any decent mechanic. It doesn't take a genious to follow step by step procedures from a service manual. The difference with having an experienced 951 mechanic is that the person already knows what to expect and how things are supposd to look. If something else is missing or out of place, a person familiar with these cars will notice it whereas some generic mechanic would not.

Even experienced 951 mechanics can occasionally make mistakes and do something silly like say.....put a sway bar on upside down . An honest experienced mechanic would be able realize their mistake and know exactly what to do to make it right. A mechanic not familiar with 951's would never know they did anything wrong and will often respond with "You don't know what your talking about".

Ouch! If your car is already disassembled, it might be best to eat this one. If you bring a part yourself, the mechanic might not provide a warranty on his work. If he screws up, it is his head, not yours.

I would bet that if you go the shop, it's already in pieces, and they are just telling you it's cracked hoping that would just say "go ahead". I'd bet that they did not see the two bolts under the timing cover, just the one on the outside and started yanking on it. I've seen a lot of shadey **** in my 12 years of wrenching in shops. A few bad shops ruin it for the ones that are actualy good, honest repair facilities.

Well update.

Firstly the shop is a primo shop, I can't take that away from them. They know their stuff and have 2 944 specialists there and several 944 turbos there as we speak. So they are good and only work on Porsche. Mostly 911s but like I said they have two waterpumper guys there. But what bothers me is that they did my timing belt and pump no more than 5 years ago and didn't notice any of this ****? I mean, you didn't notice that the seals were starting to go? Gimme a break.

Also, the cam cover was indeed cracked, but not only cracked it was destroyed. The two tunnels for the bolts to go into were completely disintegrated. He said it may have been water but I never drive this car in the rain or winter and its garaged 24/7. Ugh.

The break didn't look fresh though, it has what looked to be years of accumulation. My guess is that last time they were in there, they over torqued the thing, it cracked and then 5 years of driving later when doing the belts again it finally went bye bye.

They also charged me $170 just to tell me my AC compressor is shot. Gee thanks. :|

Something goofy is going on. That cover does not touch water or coolant. In fact, the bolts are held in at 8 nm (at least for the n/a) and touches only oil. That part has no chance to flex since it hold only one seal. Your guess is probably valid.

Don't pay any more for the a/c compressor. Now that you know, take it to another shop or DIY.

Your mechanic is a joke. I have seen them crack but it is aluminum not magnesium and there are tons of used ones available cheap.

With a mechanic like that you should be doing your own work. Can't possibly be any worse!

Oh yeah, anyone who had 2 944 specialists on staff would never tell you a 944 motor or any part of it was made of magnesium.

They are trying to justify ripping you off.

You need to check your facts before you start posting things you know nothing about.

S2 engines DO have magnesium parts...both halves of the cam gear covers are magnesium as is the entire cam shaft cover.

When I rebuilt my S2 engine, I found the same problem as you have, Lackey. I bought two new covers for the cam gear from Porsche. They were right at $90.00 each about 3 years ago. I would buy new because any used ones you get are probebly going to be in the same state of affairs.

They get cracked and broken due to idiot mechanics that do not realize they are magnesium and instead of using proper torquing procedures, they tighten the crap out of them. Also being magnesium if exposed to air for a long time, it starts to deteriorate.

That's why the magnesium parts are coated with that lovely tanish brown paint.

**** me

airflite, how can that be cracked during normal wear and tear? Please help me out here. They are sending me emails that I don't know what I'm talking about and that the part needs to be replaced.
He probably cracked the thing after going in there to "change the seal."

Those covers on the S do deteriorate and practically fall apart after time and alot of miles.

I changed one on a car I had owned for 15 years that literally had splits and cracks that you could have dropped a quarter through.

It's possible that I may have a used one, I'll post back here tomorrow if this is the case.
