Post nearing the end of rebuild.. what do these two holes do?

hey rennlisters-
i'm on the home stretch of my engine rebuild after a timing belt mishap.. i found two screwholes, and i cant figure out what they're good for. they're on the lower right side of the engine, on the block i think, right next to each other on a horizontal line, one nearer, one far, about an inch between them. they're raised from the block by two separate cylinder-type things. one of the bolt holes is slightly larger than the other. if anyone has any idea what im talking about, and what they do, please post up.
thanks
ian

Ok, please don't take offense, but I laughed for a good minute. It is doubtful I could do much better:

Pelican has some <a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/944/944_parts/944_83-85.htm" target="_blank">parts diagrams</a>. Try marking up one of those pictures and posting it here.

Looking at the engine I have on a stand in my garage, I think you're talking about the two bosses that mount a small heat shield that protects the oil pan gasket from the exhaust manifold heat.

Is it the two red holes? On a 951 they mount a heat shield and a support bracket for the intake manifold. The second boss is also used to mount the turbo downpipe. I imagine your car does not have the heat shield, but it may have a support bracket for the intake manifold

Well, he said the "lower right side" of the engine. I was thinking he was talking about the passenger side of the engine (as installed).

The heat shield is there on a 951 to shield the crankcase from the turbine/exhuast heat. This isn't an issue on a normally aspirated 944, so I'm sure there is no heat shield on that side.
