I have a theory. who did the timing/balance shaft belts? Someone who knows these cars? if one of the balance shaft pulleys is in the incorrect position (VERY easy to do for someone not experienced with these engines) you'll get a bad sound and a NASTY vibration around 4K RPM. it'll make the shift lever shake so violently that it almost hurts your hand if you've got it resting on the shift ****.

as far as the clunk, yeah, it's the clutch.

Quick update (had assistant): It's on the right side. Turns seem to make it worse (might not be true). Sound regardless of clutch pedal up or down, or in gear. But when in gear and under load, no noise. Sound not all the time either. I edited a few passes because there wasn't anything to hear... but those are fairly rare.

Mechanic did say rear right wheel bearing had some play, but not 'immediately replace it'.

My thoughts
* It's not coming from the front. This I know and have had confirmed by person outside of car. It's the rear right.
* The transmission shifts perfectly, the clutch engages and disengaged perfectly
* I get the problem just rolling, so if I get up to speed, put it in neutral and have the clutch pedal up or down, doesn't matter.
* Sound goes away under load
* Turning seems to exacerbate it, but not direction specific.

I really think rear right wheel bearing AND maybe CV at same time? I've put less than 100 miles on it since I started getting noises (my guestimate).

I am going to put it up on stands and just spin the wheel by hand...

Any tests I should perform while on stands?

Sound files are fun! Give a listen! Wheel Bearing? Please?

1-3 sound like one thing

10-12 sound like another...

I'd go for clutch too. It sounds lik the rubber centre is breaking up. There are some small parts on these clutches that hold the thing together for a while just to get you home. If you don't drive too hard it could last for several hundred miles like mine did but if you keep accelerating and de-accelerating hard in low gears it will break up sooner rather than later.
Mine just gave up very quietly one day. Driving along and suddenly all drive from the engine to transmission stopped and the car coasted to a halt.

Another classic symptom of the clutch rubber centre giving up is the car won't drive at a steady speed at low revs.. It will surge and die surge and die as the slack in the clutch is first taken up under drive then snatches in the other direction under de-acceleration.
Bit like a kangeroo by crikey

If you have a wheel bearing breaking up you'll notice that the noise will get worse when in a steady turn in one direction and get less when turning the opposite direction as the bearing is loaded more heavily in one direction and less heavily in the other direction.

You're not supposed to say clutch! =) No vibration, no hesitation, and no slow speed slipping/unsteady at low revs. I want to get to a parking lot and try the slow circle thing. IIRC I think the circle thing did exascerbate it. I think it's CV + wheel bearing, it's like two distinct noise. No feeling in shifter either (no negative feeling). Thank you for taking the time to post.

Dropped off at mechanic for 2 rear wheel bearings. After having the car sit for a week, no noise at all driving there!! and I drove a good 15 minutes... and even chirped the tires in second (I've never done (or tried to) this before... no problems. ??

Mechanic thinks it's the trans itself, also part of my vibration issue at *only* 4050rpm* But he said the rear wheel bearing on the noise side was just about shot anyway. =\

*edit* See this thread

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/433516-need-help-now-car-at-shop-need-wheel-hub-where-cost.html

Wheel Hub death from seized wheel bearing.

Replaced both wheel bearings in the rear, and one dead wheel hub. All good now! =)
