Cheap DIY paintjob, here we go.......

I also restore boats as a hobby where "rolling & tipping", as it is called, is very common.
When done with a high quality paint such as Awlgrip you get an incredible, bullet proof job without the trouble of spraying. In fact most yachts you see are done with Awlgrip. There are many other quality marine paints that can be applied in the same manner. They are engineered not to need a clear coat and will hold up to the sun and harsh saltwater environment.
I see no reason why it wouldn't work well on a car if done right. I've seen several 4x4's here that have been painted this way that were a flat satin type finish and they looked awesome.
A show called "Ship Shape" detailed the process and you can buy the episode on dvd:

i painted the house bright white gloss. a couple of times a year i would hose the asbestos shingles and all the dirt would just run off.
oh, i forgot the most important thing. the house was less than 800' from the ocean, and less than a half mile on the other two sides from a bay - all salt water. i tiled the kitchen walls to the cieling so i could just sponge mop the salty layer that would cover everything.
i painted the house in 95 and it still looked great in 05 when the people i sold it to did a scrape and built a mcmansion.

I did a similar rustoleum paint job on my 944 last summer with an HPLV gun. So far I haven't had any durability problems (no chipping or streaks) except in one area. Just behind the front wheels at the base of the fender some of the paint has been worn off (i think there was a clear decal there to protect the paint which i removed). I was especially worried about the front plastic splitter, but the paint has bent and flexed there without any cracking.
Other than that, the car has been outdoors 24/7 rain snow ice whatever since late July 2007. Some of the shine may have diminished, but it still looks good.
