What type of responses do you guys get from the uneducated car folks?
Here's a conversation I just had with a friend of mine (remember it's a female, not that it should mean much anyways). It was triggered after I told her I'm getting a car and I sent her a picture of a BEAUTIFUL red 951(I hope the pic came through...whoevers car that is hope you dont get offended)
NaDoK7: what do u wanna get
NaDoK7: lol
NaDoK7: i dont like the shape of these cars
Z LIFE TA: you need HELP
NaDoK7: they are so devon boyz
Z LIFE TA: it'll be black though
NaDoK7: shut up
NaDoK7: THANK GOD
NaDoK7: is this a nissan?
Z LIFE TA: red is nice too though!
Z LIFE TA: HELL NO!!!!!!
Z LIFE TA: i dont think we should talk anymore
NaDoK7: oh the mazda
Z LIFE TA: BYE
NaDoK7: what is it???
NaDoK7: WHAT IS IT?
Z LIFE TA: It's a Porsche.
NaDoK7: and u are thinking of buying it??
NaDoK7: are u out of ur mind
Z LIFE TA: oh first it was a nissan and now I'm out of my mind?
NaDoK7: that was one of my guesses but then i was thinking....what would TARIQ be buying
Z LIFE TA: haha....good one
NaDoK7: im serious!
NaDoK7: i dont like the shape
Z LIFE TA: why not?
NaDoK7: mayree marzee
NaDoK7: i dont like it
Z LIFE TA: ok....but this changes everything since you said that
NaDoK7: what do u mean
NaDoK7: HELLO? changes what
Z LIFE TA: forget it...you wouldnt understand
Anyways, I know people that know cars show respect to this breed of Porsches, but what about the non educateds initial response? This obviously won't sway my purchase because I could care less what people think as long as I enjoy my motoring experience, but do you guys ever get any negative feedback?

Yes, I always get negative feedback at lights when the guy next to me underestimates my car. Although blowing his doors off usually clears that up. To quote one guy who had just gotten his Eclipse out of the shop and tried to race me: "Dude I have to shake your hand. I thought I was going to eat your lunch!"

I've found that people (mostly girls, in my experience) who aren't really into cars and are brought up liking standard (bland, IMO) styles, which basically means only the cars they see everywhere, don't care for the shape. I think for them it's too different, and thus weird, since they are rarer than 3000GTs and Corvettes. One girl at work thinks her Dodge Neon looks better than my S2. However, most guys I've talked to, and especially car guys, seem to like the shape.

I get very positive responses, from both guys and girls - and mine is not even in perfect shape (I am 'restoring' an 87 944 NA).
It is more a matter of taste than one of gender. The 944/951 has very beautiful, yet very subtle lines. It is not overtly suave looking like a Corvette or sickeningly overstyled and flashy like a 3000GT or anything like that - it is a thing of more exquisite, sculpted beauty. Some are just not able to appreciate such things; the same as with a fine wine or exotic cuisine.

I think the look is best described as "timeless". Not too many cars that are almost 20 years old can still turn heads on the streets......
Also, i would like to welcome our new topic starter who is a good friend of mine who has been bitten by the porsche bug and is in the process of negotiating a deal for an 86 951 in Iowa.
Does anyone know if there are any PPIs nearby and how much it would cost to get the car checked out?

My BF (Dan87951) has, obviously, a '87 944 Turbo and whenever I show the pictures of us next to his car to girls I know, they generally don't even notice the car and if they do they are like, "What kind of car is that?" when I tell them that it is a Porsche and that he has two they get all "OOOHHHH WOW A Porsche!!! Are his parent's really rich? Does he sell drugs?!!" I think think it is hilarious and horrible all at the same time how not many girls know one car from the next, especially a Porsche! Everyone should at least be able to tell the differnce between your basic high performance machines and a regular car. Don't tell, but before I met Dan I was one of them, lol, Horrible

When I got mine I didn't even think about the whole "Porsche" aura, whatever it may be. I just thought I was getting a somewhat fast (I'm used to motorcycles)car with cool engineering and classic widely copied styling. Many people seem to think more of the Porsche than I do, my ex said I was always into status symbols(not), most others are like-really that Porsche is yours? An exgirlfriend from a long time ago and a galaxy far far away said whenI came home to visit ny parents she new it had to be me ,but what was I doing with that car??? You can play off of it , but I just tell them I bought it right. Pulling up at a stoplight next to a guy my age with his wife and 3 or 4 kids in a minivan is always fun. I get the I used to could have done that look. Oh and telling my ex-girlfriend it's amazing what you can afford with a new one that has a decent job was fun. But P-Car people know the real deal, a car that puts that stupid smile on your face.

A babe I used to work with used to joke about my "RX7".. she knew what it was, but having previously owned an 80's RX7 she knew how similar the look was. I let her drive it and she never made that joke again. She then knew the similarity ended with the lines. Another great car litmus test..in my garage sit a classic 67 mopar and the 951. When someone looks in the garage, they usually comment on one or the other.. but rarely both. Some say "awesome mopar" or "WOW..a Turbo".. You can tell a about someone by what car peaks their interest. As for me, that ole' Mopar gathers a LOT of dust.

We'll tonight I got a "lemme hear what that porsche sounds like" at a stoplight. This came from someone in a cavalier revving their engine. They ask me to race, it was funny. I told them "it's only a four cylider". I could tell that when I told them this they actually thought they would have a chance

I used to have a 951 before my 944S2 Cab and I used to love going to Grocery Stores and buying two weeks worth of food; then see the faces on people in the parking lot when they would watch me fit it ALL into the hatchback. The best looks were from the guys who were my age (with wife and kids) when they saw how much room there was in the hatch; knowing that they just sold their sports car for a shinny new minivan. I still can't get over the fact that guys or girls get rid of there sports cars when they have kids even though they own a minivan or SUV that can haul the family around.

Dan,
Funny you mention the '67 mopar.. I've got one of them myself. Whenever I take that car out, at least one or two people always comment on the car.
It's a fun car, but I really just don't have the same passion for it that I do for my future 951.
I really don't know why I don't have the passion for the galaxie, but I think it has something to do with the "sailboat" feeling I get when I drive it.
I wish I could keep both cars, but insurance is forcing me to give up the galaxie (just to my parents until I can get classis insurance on it).
