I thought I would share the response I got this past weekend at a BP station. It was Saturday--beautiful weather, I had the car at the gas pump with my GF in the passenger seat facing the BP "foodshop". On the opposite side of the pump I was using was a minivan. As I am pumping gas--I see a guy in his mid 30's walking towards the van carrying a gallon of milk--he looks at the car, then at me pumping gas, then at my GF, then at his minivan, then at the ground. When he drove away I had to chuckle to myself--if he only knew he probably paid twice as much for his minivan.

Don't be too harsh on the guy... he probably wishes that he had the extra $$ to buy a car like yours, as a "second" car. That could very well be his dream, but one that he can't realize at this time.

He could very well be a great guy... a devoted family man that cares very much for his wife and children, but who isn't currently at the stage in his life (i.e. financial position) where he can satisfy his need to take care of his family's priorities as well as his personal passion for a sports car.

Life is full of priorities and decisions. Perhaps at this time, his focus is on his family. As long as he keeps dreaming of the day when he gets that Porsche he always wanted, he is "alive". If you give up on your dreams, you die.

I have a 21 month old son, and another boy due to be born next month. Given that, I consider myself very lucky to own my S2 at this stage in my life. Most folks (not on this biased board, of course) would argue that my owning this car right now is not the right time.

I can relate to this story, because my focus is very much so on my family... including a minivan. (We are looking towards buying a Honda Odyssey at some point soon!!) If I hadn't bought the S2 a few months ago, that guy could have very well have been me!!

Feeling very fortunate,

Jim

Ahhhh...I feel less guilty now. Thanks Jim I never knew you could do that. I thought once you posted there was no turning back.

Has anyone seen the new Mazda MPV commercial? It's almost funny how they try to market it as a "sporty" minivan.

I think part of the beauty of having a watercooled Porsche is that people just don't THINK PORSCHE when they see it. I think if you want to get a Porsche for the attention you might as well just get a 911. Yeah those that know cars know how crucial the watercooled models are to the Porsche line but to the uneducated there's more of a sense of "what's that?" while even the most ignorant car critic can spot a 911.

It's a benefit though. Other cars?

That's a Volkswagen? (Corrado owners)
Are you sure that's a Beamer? (8-series)
Isn't that a Cavellier? (Cadillac Cimarron-don't ask how I recalled this model...I'm scarred for life)
Does it bite? (Pontiac Aztec)

Personlly, I worry less about _what_ other people drive and more about _how_ they drive it.

"Use turn signals for merges and lane changes as well as turns. Drive right, pass left. Pay attention!"

Jim, what's so f*&kin'hard about this?

personally i like it when people at gas stations ask me if i like it... then they proceed to tell me that they wish they could have something like that. they are driving these 80's and 90's grandma cars that are just plain crummy. i then tell them how much i paid for my 84 944, and watch the jaw drop. i then tell them good luck finding one, and get in the car. the sad thing is these people dont take care of the crappy cars they have, how would they treat one like mine. happy driving

Two encounters...

Airport Security Inspector: (After seeing that it is a Porsche.) "Okay...I need to check your trunk. Now where's the engine located on this thing? Man, that is one nice car!"

_____

Teenage Girl at Subway: (Who obviously has never seen a pristine example of a 944 in her life.) "Hey, what kind of car is that? It sure is sharp!"

For most "uneducated car folks," there is truly a Porsche Mystique. The 944 is the best car for the money, if you want to experience the Mystique!

Are his parent's really rich? Does he sell drugs?!!" I think think it is hilarious and horrible all at the same time how not many girls know one car from the next, especially a Porsche! Everyone should at least be able to tell the differnce between your basic high performance machines and a regular car. Don't tell, but before I met Dan I was one of them, lol, Horrible

I loved my 86 Taurus SHO; relaible, fast and comfortable car for getting from point A to B. Bought it brand new, put over 115,000 miles on it, didn't want to get rid of it, but it was totalled by a large 4X4 doing an illegal U-turn. Glad I wasn't in the 951 or on the CBR. If I had been in my FJ40, the outcome would've been very different.

Cheers,

Steve Cooper

Of'course the SHO is excluded from all previous Taurus statments. Especially the older model like the one you had. I always liked those cars for some reason.

I'm still in high school and dad has bought me 3 87 944S in the past 6 months. When I tell all my friends (who are mostly guys that drive Honda Civics) that I drive a Porsche, their like...."Wow!! Can I get a ride in it one day??!? Please?!!?!" There's this one dude who stopped by my shop one night and was like..."Wow..ya'll are my heroes!!" My friend saw him the other day and he told me that he was going to stop by to look at one of my '44S cause he blew up his Eclipse Turbo up (street racing) and doesn't have the money to get another one. But he wants one of my 944S! I think we'll have a new Porsche owner pretty soon!!!

Words fail me.

If I were you, I would be a lot more proud of the fact that I drove a porsche if I actually paid for one of them.

i second that

it makes me to hear that people are just handed these cars and then have the nerve to brag to their buddies about "their" cars. i work my tail off to drive my 84, my dad has recently been doing lots of work buying old n/a's and fixing them up, our first purchase was an 83 944 with 18,000 on it , now has 26,000, its a really fun piece of history... i loved the 83 so much i decided that i should have one for a daily driver... out goes the ford tempo (which i had almost paid off) and in comes the 84 for only 1200 more than i paid for the tempo! beleive me the fact that i am paying for and doing most of the modifications/maintenance on the car myself adds so much to my pride in the car... i'm glad your proud, but is it really right?
