Default Why won't my headlights close?

They pop-up fine when the switch is turned on. They no longer want to close when the switch is turned off. Any ideas on this? I have messed with all the relays and most everything else I can think of.

Have to use the manual "wheel" to close them.

I'm sure this has happened to others. Anyone know what the fix is?

Scott, There's a relay on the headlight motor, under the rubber cover - open it up and clean the contacts inside. My early car was doing that.

In my case it was a bad rotary switch on the headlight motor. The thing that tells the system if the lights are up or down. It can be cleaned, or it gets replaced with the headlight motor assembly.

In my case if I gave the manual **** a spin the rotary switch moved to a clean spot and the lights would finish going down on their own.

Yeah, wiggle the connector by the relay, sometimes this will get things going if the contacts are worn out (mechanically).

I can help sometime, if needed... though I'm totally booked until after Race 1!

Ok - thanks for the tips.
John - I've swapped that relay out with other relays - I'm not sure that is the problem. Will investigate further.
Joel - Not sure where the switch you reference is located. Any extra clues?
Vaughan - if this becomes a big deal - I'll be in touch.

Do they 'try' to close at all? My old NA had this issue when the headlight buckets were miss-adjusted....

The rotary switch is part of the headlight motor assembly, it's been a long time since I've had one apart but I want to say it lives on the cross shaft that is 90 degrees to the motor axis, under the white plastic part the relay fits into. The relay starts and stops the motor and the rotary switch opens and closes contacts that indicate if the lights are up or down or in between. There are little wipes and contacts in there that get corroded and dirty. Easy enough to get to once the headlight motor is on your bench.

I have the same problem, I have replaced switch in dash, relay on motor, taken motor apart and cleaned contacts. What I have traced it down to is one of the wires going to the headlight motor. It doesn't have the correct voltage it must be cracked some place between the headlight motor and the fuse box. Good luck.

No. It used to "try" - but now that is "dead". It used to be I could twirl the dial on the motor and then it would find that "happy spot" and close. The happy spot seems to have gone away.

Maybe the wire mentioned by erics is the problem.

If this is the worst problem I have with this car (which, unfortunately, it isn't) then it wouldn't be so bad. The list of stuff that needs fixing is pretty long. This one is in the middle somewhere...

check on the headlight switch one of the thicker wires in the corner (I think its red) should be 12+ from the ignition switch. if there is no power there the headlights wont close....

put the light switch in the down position, then play w/ the wiring going to the motor- sometimes a crack develops and the wire brakes. It may contact and they'll drop. Could also be the light switch not making contact in the off position.
