40 MPG in the 951; aka desperate times call for desperate measures

Robby, the 5th gear is fairly easy to swap out as you only need to take off the nose section of the tranny when its on the ground. You will need a paper gasket the end plug along with loctite for the 2 bolts you have to remove internally. One of the bearing race is pressed in so a puller is needed unless you pry carefully. It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes with the tranny sitting on the ground and thats taking my time.
I am not going for top speed and don't care about the gap between 4th and 5th as I am not going on the race track with this tranny. Being able to spin at less rpm cruising under very little load at highway speed is what I am after.
No, it is not an option driving slowly on S. Ca freeways. Its a fast solid block of traffic pretty much all the time moving at 70+ miles per hour with only a few car lengths between cars. Actually, there may be a drafting effect unique to So Ca. drivers.

Ofcourse, now that my 944 is my winter beater it doesn't get very good mileage at all

On long trips I can get in the mid 30s. Of course my measurements are not exactly precise but still it did MUCH better than it does in town.
Now for a second there you had me going with the tape on the nose of the car!!!

944CS- I've read a few times that the 924 is a .32 b/c it has less bodywork to impede airflow.
Legoland- when I said "hole" I meant complete hole, as in acceleration AND top speed, but more from the accel standpoint. In other words, if running in 5th, at any speed below ~125, you'll have to drop into 4th to accelerate hard. But, of course, I still understand that your concern is queiter crusing, mileage, etc, so it's a great idea for that. Plus, how many street races really go much beyond the 125 or so of the optimum 4th gear? Some tracks don't need any more than that. So, you'll still have 4 good gears + one nice tall one. I think a .778 is a nice medium, which is why I want that for mine.

From: one thousand, five hundred miles north of Ft. Lauderdale for the summer.
outstanding ! i still consider this one of the best April Fools day threads evarrr.
since finishing my front valance, my fuel mileage is up about 1 mpg to about 30~31 (also had about a 2.5 mpg gain after dropping the old exhaust and cat for the new system 2 years ago)... but time to actually try this !! i'll get a roll of the narrow green tape to run along the hood, gas cap and signal light fixture seams for my next 1,000 mile drive and see if the mileage improves even more.
ooops. did i recycle a recycled thread ?

I run Acetone 3 oz/10 gal petrol (no etOH) in every tank. 5.3L lean tune with 951 trans/NA 5th gear installed with 26" O.D. rear tires. I am consistently getting 29-30 mpg on my hiway trips. At 65mph my tach is reading 2550 rpm.
