What is this 1986 951 worth?
I am planning on maybe purchasing this 1986 951 which currently has 155K miles. It is in fair to good condition depending upon how you look at it. It is currently running a little rich and has more than normal turbo lag. Haven't seen the car in person yet but this car does have a LSD tranny, oil cooler and sport seats. Just knowing this info and seeing a few pictures, what would be a good price to buy this car for? Please help. Thanks.

5-6k in my opinion. Seats need to be reupholstered, assuming dash cracked, interior pretty well worn. Exterior looks decent and engine problems (lag probably cracked header or crossover, rich could be a lot of things most common vacume leak).
Just noticed it is missing the batwing. Check the body lines for accidents. Looks like a pretty decent car.

Body looks pretty straight and the paint is original and water still beads up. The only thing is the dash has some cracks and the interior looks a little dirty but I guess you can't expect a clean light interior after 22 years. The main thing is having a reliable motor/tranny. Interior can always be cleaned up by later.
Is the bat wing the piece on the front airdam?
His mechanic did mention that it could be an exhaust leak. If it is a cracked header, is it very expensive to replace? What is a crossover?

Repair receipts/maint history?
Run the vin through Porsche to see if safety recalls have been done?
Carfax?
Ask local listers to take a look at it?
Spend hours reading about '86 Turbo's here on Renn?
Take it for a drive?
these are just a start...

I may be poorly informed, but I didn't think air bags were available on the 86s. I thought that was only available starting 1987. Is it an 87? Am I wrong about the option?

Dad and I bought a 951 and an S4 off ebay, but we knew the right questions to ask. Even then a few things came back to bite us in the ***, like low miles that turned out to be a busted spedo gear that PO swept under the carpet.
I have since pieced together about 40k of blank tape and have set the odo to reflect it.

3-4grand- HA your smokin crack mon. Looks about as nice as my car was when i bought it plus it has LSD and sport seats. Who cares about maintenance if it runs then slap a belt on it and a tune up. I would say 5500-8k

Prices are all over the place in the Bay Area -- partly due to people losing storage spaces as a result of real estate prices.
Here is a datapoint as a reference point for bargain basement numbers. Two years ago, I picked up an '86 951 in need of TLC for only $3k. No LSD and no sports seats. Around that time, I also picked up a pair of mint-condition sports seats for $700.
