Some of you may remember my post a few months ago of the 951 I saved, here is a picture from that thread:

Well I got the car running as planned, but now it is time to tackle the horrible custom blue paint job that the PO attempted to do. Its one of those paint jobs that you can tell no prep went into, and I think he tried to do it in his garage. The paint is chipping off around all of the edges revealing shiny white paint under the blue, so I have been pretty optimistic about getting it back to the original white paint.
Well today I decided to try and get the blue off of a small area as a test. I took off the headlight door to use as my test subject.
The first pic is just a before shot of the blue paint. Next I applied paint stripper and waited about 5 minutes which was half of what the can suggested to wait for softening paint. Then I used the sharp edge of a paint stripping brush to remove the top layer of paint. After the stripper was cleaned off I used paint thinner to remove the remaining blue paint. And finally I used some cleaner wax to polish the original white paint. It will definately need some more waxing once everything is done to get it really clean looking but I feel good about my success today.
One headlight door down, a whole car to go.....

Not really. As the car sits it would need a total respray, so I figured if I can make it look good by getting the blue paint off and back to the original white then great, but if I mess up the white in the process then it still needs a respray and the blue would have to come off anyways.

Good job Colin! Keep us posted on how a large panel like the hood goes.

thats awesome.
That paint stripper stuff has a tough time on original paint (from my experience).
Im trying to strip down a set of fuchs and I managed to easily strip the 2 spray painted coats from the PO, but the original black paint is being impossible!
sounds like you've got a lot of work ahead of you though. The good part is that the paint stripper does most of the work for you!

This gives me hope. At one point my car got a terrible repaint. Just about the whole car has orange peel texture to it, in fact it looks very close to how your headlight cover looked. I may try this to get it off. I'll probably need a full re-spray anyway since i have some body work to do as well.

lol, I told you that it was going to need a good home.
Yeah its very surprising how strong the original paint is I have spilled just about every chemical there is on it in the past and it always just wipes clean.
