Question How do you drop the starter on a 951?

I've done it on a 1983 before, but that was a 4-bolt deal. The 951 has what appear to be some heat shields with large allen head bolts that look rather intimidating.

Before I run out to buy new allen head sockets, do those have to come off? TIA

Hi Luis!

I´m mechanically retarded and I have done this.
It´s been a couple of years, but I´m quite sure the heat shields must come off.

Hi Luis!

To remove the starter on a 951, you do need to remove the heat sheilds. Make sure to use an open end wrench (17mm I believe) to remove the bolts holding the heat shield as opposed to a ratcheting box end wrench. The shield bolts come very close to bottoming out on the crossmember and you need the open end to get in there.

You're intimidated by a heat shield? If you use good tools and penetrating oil there should be no problem.

Actually, it's the largish allen head bolts that I'm unfamiliar with.

10-12mm allen heads are not common on these cars and anything starter-related is usually very tightly fastened. Not the kind of bolt I want to round out.

10mm allen head socket is what you need- not bad- key is the two large 17mm bolts that hold the front of the shield by the x-over - the shield has slots so just loosen those slightly and pull the rear two 8mm bolts and pull it off. Trying to get those bolts out is pointless.

I take it the 17mm bolts are the same as on the 83 and the 10mm allen heads are just to loosen the shield, then. Thanks, Dan, Riff, and everyone else!

allen bolts on the heat shield? WTF? am I different? I have 2 10 mm nuts on the back of the starter, 2 17mm bolts to the bell housing, and one freakishly large (17 or 19mm, I can't recall right now) to the bell housing/torque tube

the 8mm nuts hold the shield to the starter and the 17's hold the sheild to the bellhousing. the 10mm bolts hold the starter on. There is an 8mm and 13mm nut holding the wires to the starter and a 13mm on the battery positive that you should first disconnect

Just pry the heat shield a little and get an impact in there
