Default The quest for a crack free dash...

And the journey begins on a nice day with temps in the 60's with some black vinyl and contact cement....

What prep did you do to the dash before applying the vinyl? Did you fill cracks?

Also, is that a prefab piece of vinyl or did you cut it from scratch?

It looks good. Keep us updated and good luck..

All the cracks were cut out, then prepped and filled with filler, sanded down and then the entire dash was sanded with 80 grit sandpaper. The vinyl is just standard vinyl by the yard I ordered from a VW supply house a few years ago (used for upholstery, door panels, headliners, etc).

And we are nearly done. Just need to figure out the best way to do the defroster holes. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

The vinyl stretches rather easy. You just have to make sure that you work out the wrinkles and so forth before the vinyl touches the dash as once it makes contact, it's stuck. A lot of stretching and pulling (but not too much) and it goes down easy and contours rather nice. I need to rework the DS vent opening as it is a little too wrinkled for my liking (just needs to be stretched more).

No heat gun....yet anyway. I may have to try that on the vent area but so far it's just been me, the vinyl and contact cement.

i'm a little confused why that guy uses seams and he's a pro when the guy who started this thread is a DIYer and was able to do it without seams...
